Antique Memes Roadshow@lemmy.world•This one's got some dust on itEnglish
1·2 days agoI bought a Razor phone in 2005 (or 2006, those two years were a bit of a blur tbh) that did let me go on the internet, but it was very slow and web pages were difficult to navigate.

2·3 days agoI also don’t own a TV. And I’ve gone without music for long periods. So I guess that leaves my phone to give up? I think I could manage just fine

25·6 days agoAn ‘allowance’ like that doesn’t always solve a homeless situation. Some folks have mental or physical health issues that force them into homelessness. Or they are in a domestic violence situation, where it might be safer to change your location every few days.
Billionaires are so obscenely out of touch with the reality that vulnerable populations exist in
The one that breaks my heart is the Christian counseling services, which are so often not true therapy. There are absolutely licensed therapists out there who are Christian and can advertise that. Just hate watching people who have serious mental health problems go to counseling and hating themselves because prayer isn’t usually enough to help.
I’m a firm believer that if there is a God, he provided the tools and people to help his flock deal with modern problems. But people often turn away from using these tools or services :(
I just went through 4 years of university as an elder millenial, the youngins still feel this way and I honestly thought it was a Gen Z thing. I’d never encountered the punctuation issue before I decided to go to school again
There’s a Fundamental Christian influencer named Aria Lewis who has that “insurance”. She’s been dealing with dental problems and basically made a post one day asking her followers if that insurance was a scam because she wasn’t able to get the care she really needed
It’s crazy what problems people fall into when they choose something has “Christian” in the name over what everyone else is using
Omg. I walk on the balls of my feet, those socks would be perfect
My brain operates only on “are they a threat”, and within that is “are they a friend”. I can name only a handful of people I find attractive if I’m pressed, but it’s always on a “this human is art” level.
I’m aroace, though, which likely is why I don’t evaluate people for hotness
My cardboard box collection has saved me countless dollars over all the moves I have made as an adult. I average a move every 1.6 years

News@lemmy.world•The Increasingly Long Drive to Give Birth in Rural AmericaEnglish
71·10 days agoThis happens even in states that have enshrined abortion in their constitution, like Montana. Where I lived in Montana we had to drive 2.5 hours one way for the nearest maternity center. It may absolutely be the case that abortion bans are causing these maternity centers to close in many areas, but where I lived it was happening because the rising costs of Healthcare, and the costs to entice doctors to “the frontier”, were too high for keeping the local (and quite poor) population safe and healthy

This is the law that protected access to abortion

A lot of homeless people can’t work. But, for those who can, it’s hard to find a job when you haven’t been able to shower for a week, have no money to purchase nice clothing for interviews (let alone no where to keep these nice clothes), and don’t have an address which is often needed to secure either a job or benefits.
I have been homeless this year, and was lucky enough to get into a housing program. But my finances are still fucked, and I can’t work because of serious mental and physical disabilities. It’s a trap that is so difficult to get out of, and I’m very worried that I’ll be homeless again in a few years.
Imagine the toll this takes on a person, then add that this population is hated, derided, and repeatedly victimized by both the general population and the government/police. Imagine struggling with mental issues, and having all that you’ve managed to collect stolen from you every other week. Imagine having physical disabilities and being unable to run away from assaults. Imagine all of the above with the additional burdens of being a woman, a POC, and/or LGBTQ+.
Now think about how rough the job market is for people who have stable housing, and who meet the qualifications of a job, and for those who wouldn’t be a “DEI” hire in the age of “anti-woke”.
Empathy isn’t a weakness, it literally only means that you understand someone else’s plot in life. Being able to understand situations like or unlike your own is a strength, and it’s necessary to promote societal change. And that is exactly why conservatives hate it

I am not for the death penalty in any capacity. However, this woman kept trying to murder people while in prison, although in far less horrific and dramatic ways than she murdered Colleen. I imagine the isolation she experienced on death row had an effect on the murder attempt? She needed to be in a psychiatric hospital
(I thought I had read elsewhere that she had two murder attempts on fellow inmates, one involving a romantic partner, but Wikipedia only has one attempt so I’ll leave it at that)
