Scrolling past the thumbnail and seeing the big hat, I was expecting the photo to be of someone way over the top super fancy, loaded up with jewelry, huge hat, big sunglasses, plenty of makeup, and saying “no, I live according to my modest means.”

The short answer is size. Longer answer is because of how the compression works and it’s not what it was designed for. PNG are more suited to graphics.

png is completely the wrong format for photos.
