Wasn’t Admiral Patrick one of the devs that got caught upvoting all the Zionist propoganda posts like a year and a half ago? I wished I saved that thread. None of the most egregious Zionists accounts are on the ban list even though they are very abrasive and political extremists. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rest was just a cover for that.

Using the word Zionist or the Epstein Class hides your comment :/ and I swear every account that’s critical of Israel is on that list.

  • The situation would be the same if he also could block you for other users and instances without telling them.

Personally blocking a user on your account is fine Personally blocking a user from your admin is fine

Both those things use Lemmy tools and the modlog. Banning people with a secret shadowban malware list and distributing this malware to other instances is unethical.

I’m fairly certain this user is Admiral Patrick’s alt. He is in every thread not only defending but straight up lying.

I highly urge everyone to go take a look at the list. There’s lgbt communities and instances, small news orgs and even a word ban so your comment doesn’t show if it has “Epstein class” in it for example.

The app only showed you half the ban list, it hid the LGBTQ bans, users and comment stuff from what I understand.

  • I think what’s problematic is some of the bans seem to target the LGBTQ community (blahaj and wholesomeyuri being notable examples), as well as smaller news comms.

Another bit is how broad and sporadic the user ban list is. Sure some of the users appear to be of the abrasive type (like me for example, I get the feeling I could be nicer at times). But a lot of the names on it simply aren’t problematic and have clean comment histories, empty of any political comments even.

I’m fairly certain Admiral Patrick was running a custom fork of his front end with a “ban from tesseract” button he’d use whenever someone seemed to mildly go against his world views.

It was slipped into his front end as well in a way that qualifies as malicious imo. He is an admin of his own instance, he could have simply blocked everyone at an instance level with the normal Lemmy modding tools. This was a way to circumvent the modlog so it wouldn’t show and it was hidden inside a front end solution he was actively trying to distribute. It’s incredibly shady. I left Reddit in part because of the shadow banning and hiding content, and this guy is trying to recreate it and spread it like some kind malware.

It feels like it goes against every principal the federation system stands for. I trust my instance admins to make the banning decisions, but he wants to add an extra hidden layer without informing anyone, hide it and then distribute it? It’s highly unethical and frankly arrogant.

The fucking balls on him. Acting like he is doing everyone a favor. He can ban who he wants from his instance, that’s how federation is supposed to work. What he did was add a secret shadowban list at a software level just to bypass the modlog and force it on everyone.

His behavior and response are ridiculous. We shouldn’t even be federating with anything using tesseract. The guy and his repo should become a pariah.

Not to mention he tries to pretend it’s about making the place peaceful and less toxic but bans communities like WholesomeYuri and small news comms.

Oh I didn’t notice, I actually went through the last popular post and saved it from when it was posted on this comm a few weeks ago.

I’m guessing the link was probably in the post body but I didn’t think to paste it over, my mistake. I didn’t crop anything though but I should have included a link in any case.

Someone in the comments mentioned it’s Adam Ellis if you want to see more of his work.
