  • You seem to be under the impression that he’s anything other than just a giant asshole.

Yeah, actually. I don’t believe in essences. Under my personal philosophy, we humans are more like information perturbation machines with extreme sensitivity to initial conditions. It’s close to saying you aren’t anything except the uniquely weighted combination of all your prior experiences, having been processed through the human scope of awareness and memory (if distinguishing the two is even fair here).

That said, nobody is nothing except “just a giant asshole.” I mean that physically, you can’t. You’re stuck in a constant state of becoming something, not being something, which is a necessary consequence of having your human awareness.

The boys deviance from our expectations has to do with his upbringing. We should be able to use specialist services to counterweight that upbringing. And I’d go as far to say, we really should be taking this approach to punishment. Because our current version of just hiding them away in an isolated brick room where nobody except similar deviants and Correction Officers can reach them… that in particular is a rather barbaric approach, in my opinion.

I think prison is exactly the place that was constructed just for cases like his. Maybe this time he will learn.

And what about being “constructed just for cases like this” means it was the right approach? The concentration camps in the holocaust were also constructed for purpose, yet I hope you wouldn’t use the same argument for those.

  • Instead of prison where we know people commonly experience rape, abuse, neglect, and forced labor — imagine he was forced to live in some new branch of punitive enforcement that sits between prison and mental asylum. A place where he’s forced to sit with counselors, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists… imagine he’s treated with dignity as a human, like something is clearly wrong with him, and like we can actually help solve that problem directly for him. He could be sentenced to this place for something like “at most 2 years, unless the authority believes he’s ready earlier.” It’s like a conversion camp, but to help immoral people understand why they might want to act morally within society. Wouldn’t that be a little more ideal than something like prison?

Edit: could even follow-up release with required training for personal finance, hospitality, and the like… to include community service hours and required check-in with a probation officer that works with mental health professionals.

  • At what point do we realize their strategy is to contend good rhetoric and reason, and it is quite effective, so reasonably we ought consider less reasonable approaches. Not necessarily unreasonable, but surely areasonable (if you’ll give me that). Not to tether my thread to the Marxist ideology but I believe they had a term for something like this, the “Great Refusal.” Modern equivalent, “fuck off, we’ll move on without you.” Not to the politics, but to their sources of power… in essence, maybe, when do we build infrastructure and demand public ownership of it? When do we organize unions and general strikes without playing by the elitist establishment’s rules for doing so? When do we prioritize seeking out manners to fill the majority of our free time by means opposed to consumerism altogether? When do we as communities secure the functional ability to resolve our own needs for retirement and break the established dependence on financial markets or labor for securities in our vulnerable years? Surely there’s quite a few ways we can be doing a lot more as a society.

  • It’s a supercomputer center, so I imagine large data transfer is normal in the environment. They could have piggybacked on existing high-throughput data workflows, or somehow blended into expected large transfers. Data can be exfiltrated over weeks or months, across multiple endpoints or accounts, … and compression could have happened prior to transfer (meaning the transfer may have been smaller than 10PB). Monitoring could have been inadequate or bypassed.

I imagine the puny change could be indicative of wanting a fast sale. Possibly, if they decided to store the data on cloud drives via a credit line. They might want a sale before the bill comes.

    Edit: yup

According to the alleged attacker, they gained access through a compromised VPN domain, then deployed a botnet to extract data. Instead of transferring data in bulk, the attacker distributed the exfiltration across multiple systems and moved ‘smaller’ amounts over about six months to avoid detection. Such a method relies more on exploiting system architecture than on advanced hacking techniques, which in part helped the perpetrator to avoid detection.

  • 104 more sailors killed in the Epstein Class war is a damn shame.

Just to add another angle, and sorry it’s a little devoid of empathy; this is also damage control training for the Iranians. Those who made it out are now better fit to do it again next time. The U.S. is really doing a number on itself. Consider just the tip of the iceberg:

    • Iranians know they can now leverage the Strait for political purposes. One could argue, a seat at the round table is why they wanted nuclear weapons… you’ve shown them another way.
    • Iranian leadership was more reluctant to challenge the US head on. That is… until you killed that leadership.
    • Iranian government now has, what, 10 demands including the right to pursue nuclear weapons? They’re making the demands now, whereas you were the one to bomb them rather than negotiate on good faith. Previously, you could have settled for a skinny list of 2-3 such demands while also avoiding a war.

And now you’re teaching their Navy about damage control.

  • Are there any other hate crimes regarding specific religion in that list?

This may be the wrong question, but if the notion is special treatment toward a particular religion, I need to ask… and please forgive my ignorance… what mainstream examples exist of words like “antisemitism,” but regarding some other specific religion?

I’m trying to rule out the idea that this inclusion isn’t just a matter of listing off different common types of hate crimes. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any words beside “antisemitism,” though I do know (1) “antisemitism” is specific to Judaism and (2) hate crime can target any religion. So, to be more fair, what else should they have included in the list?
