Please state your credentials on the matter. I am a hobbyist that has never shot a human but a 30-06 is a big fucking round going really fucking fast and necks are really fucking soft. The entry may be small but that exit is going to be significant. In my opinion.
I’ve put everything from 410 to 12ga and .177 to .50 caliber down range, typically shooting 5.56, 30-30, 7.62, .45 and 9mm, typically at silhouettes, wood logs, target clays, but occasionally pumpkins, watermelons, gallon jugs with ballistic gel. I’ve also hunted, typically with my 30-30 lever action.
You can’t compare the impact on a ballistic gel torso with a head, because it has no muscle and it weighs significantly less. You can’t compare the impact on any object of 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 or 100 lb let alone a neck shot on someone who weighs approximately 200 pounds.
That bullet went thru ‘clean’ in that it didn’t hit any significant bone structure. It still tore apart his arteries which is why the blood rushed out so quickly, then the footage cut.
A shot like that on dear with a 30-30 round or a.45 in a similar spot wouldn’t blow their head off. It would just drop the deer dead in its tracks. If you propped it up on a chair when it got shot, it would look pretty damn close
Tldr; a bullets impact on a similarly composed 50lb target will be much more exaggerated than the impact on a real 200lb target
My understanding is that the exit will often be big because of the bullet hitting bone and shit, making it flatter and thus destroy a lot more on the way out. The neck is soft and there isn’t much of it. If the bullet didn’t hit his spine, the bullet would be intact, and the exit hole would be pretty tiny.
Also I suspect the Ammo used assuming it’s what they claim it to be was possibly old and the rifle couldve been worn. Those two could in theory fuck up the velocity of the round resulting in the damage we saw. Still weird but well within start ammo fuckery.

Yep, the neck being soft is an argument against gory splatter action. Ballistic gel is soft too.

Yea afaik for a bullet that size, size and inertia of the bullet can cause damage much wider than the bullet size itself.
It doesn’t need to hit bone or anything for that… A youtube video can show that on one of those soft blobs.
