In January 2026, Trump reposted a false claim on TruthSocial asserting that Walz and alleged fraud in state programs were connected to the shootings.116 Trump was criticized by Minnesota officials, including Walz, who said, "in covering for an actual serial killer, he is going to get more innocent people killed."117 The Hortmans’ children called on Trump to remove the post and apologize. The White House did not respond to a request for comment on the post.

Scrapped from wiki, but the last sentence hit me; the white house is independent of the President administration? How? Or am I reading it wrong?

I guess they used “The White House” because they did not ask Trump personally but his press secretary or whoever answers questions from the public.

I think OP misunderstood it because the first few sentences mention Trump multiple times, then switch to “The White House”. If they are not familiar with the concept of using “the White House” as a synonym for “the president (+staff)” or if they are not a native speaker, that might seem like the White House might be a separate entity able to comment on the president’s actions.

Correct. The phrase “The White House” refers metonymically to the entire executive branch of the United States government.
