For ground chicken, the USDA allows 25% of samples at a plant to be contaminated. For ground turkey, 13.5%. Chicken parts should not exceed 15.4% of samples contaminated, while the number is 9.8% for whole chickens.

When inspectors find a plant has exceeded the salmonella standard, there is very little they can do except note it. The agency has no authority to enforce the standards.
Since Costco’s Fremont plant opened in 2019 it has consistently failed the USDA’s monthly rolling tests for salmonella, receiving the worst Category 3 rating 92% of the time, the report says. Over a more recent period, from September 2023 through July 2025, the Fremont plant received a Category 3 rating 100% of the time, the director of Farm Forward, Andrew deCoriolis, tells Sentient, suggesting that contamination rates are getting worse
I was moreso referring to confinement to a small dirty space (see above), the mutilation of baby animals without anesthetic, the live maceration of baby male chicks in the egg industry, the mass breeding and conveyor belt murder of millions of sentient beings, the selective breeding that has caused a few week old broiler chicken to be equivalent to a 300 lb human toddler, etc etc.
People will se this and say “oh, good thing I don’t buy ground chicken” without realizing what’s in all their processed, pre-packeged, chicken-meat food items.
