Because of this success, they managed, at several points, to have one candidate (of their family) ruling over multiple major holdings at once, due to feudal inheritance laws.
Here, Charles V is shown, as Holy Roman Emperor (Germany), King of Spain, Archduke of Austria, and ruler of several major Italian holdings, complaining about how THREATENED his land is by France, which borders SO MANY of his possessions! Surely this is proof of their nefarious intentions, and not how twisted and interconnected the Habsburg Family Circle has made itself in European royal politics 😭
