I always thought puffed rice and stuff was from cooking and freeze drying or deep frying or something.

Never cared enough to look into it, but TIL.

I imagine the pressure wave of the first pop will likely trigger nearby kernels to pop, causing a popping cascade like what happened with the submerged glass vacuum photomultiplier tubes at the Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector on 2001-11-12.

I thought about the exact same thing. Exactly like Super-Kamiokande.

(A guy who thought us about Super-Kamiokande and neutrinos at my university showed us his photos with Bruno Pontecorvo taken at some ski resort in Soviet Union after Pontecorvo defected to USSR and the whole world was trying to figure out where he was. He worked on Manhattan project and allegedly help Russians build their atomic bomb. He never admitted to working on it but he did come up with the theory of neutrino oscillation which was later proven by Super-Kamiokande.

My other professor played basketball with Fidel Castro.)

Someone has to have tried throwing a handful of kernels into magma before, right? Or at the very least been very irresponsible with a blast furnace?

they would just burn in those cases. they pop from the buildup of steam inside the kernel, so if you heat them with too hot of a heat source the hull will burn and let the steam out before they have a chance to pop. thats why you need oil when popping corn in most circumstances, to modulate the heat and avoid burning them. air poppers are kind of unique in not needing oil, but they do still tend to burn the kernels slightly and often have more duds than more traditional methods done properly.
