Okay, so I tried Tuta and found the UI clunky and buggy. I tried Mailbox.org and their billing is a mess and they took my money without crediting the account. *(I have a pending ticket, we’ll see what they said.)
I do have a proton mail account, but I haven’t given them $ yet because of… well you know. Sadly, out of the three I’ve tried their product is the best.
Wondering what to check out next. I really want to ditch the G but I’m evaluating services before I jump off the ledge this time.
Given that it’s November, if you aren’t in a hurry you might want to check whether whatever provider you decide to go with had a Black Friday sale last year. I wouldn’t let a sale be a deciding factor on what to use, but if a service you want to try is likely to have a sale in a few weeks you may as well wait.
inbox.eu if looking for a cheap-ish European client
I use Fastmail with my own domain. It’s great.
- Forward Email
- Self-hosted email: Stalwart
Fastmail. They do just mail and aren’t attempting to be a full Google Suite replacement.
Been there for almost a decade with zero issues.
Fastmail has servers in the US, which is not great for privacy. Even if you use their EU server there’s still a copy of your data in the US:
Resilient replicas of your data will live in the US (for now). As we only have one location in Europe so far, the geographically separate copy will remain on servers in one of our US locations.
Still better than what the Proton CEO is doing.
Honestly, bring on the down votes but Proton is a massive, massive improvement over google. Bring your own domain into it and then you can switch providers at a later time hassle free if they do something annoying enough to warrant the switch.
Ive seen the hate, I agree; fuck the CEO, but compared to google it is wildly the better the better choice
What exactly do you mean by “bring your own domain into it”. How does this work?
Look for an email provider that supports an email address with custom domains. Then you buy a domain of your choosing (can be as little as $5 for the year). e.g. if I get the domain www.craziman.co.uk, then I can take that to my mail provider and my email can be edgelord@craziman.co.uk. Or make it a catch all address… So any email sent to <anything>@craziman.co.uk gets sent to my inbox. So I can make up any alias I want. If I sign up for an account I can input my email as insurance@craziman.co.uk. then in the future if I get marketing emails sent to this address then I k ow who sold my personal information and I can easily block all emails from insurance@craziman.co.uk
https://proton.me/support/custom-domain You buy a domain, use that for your proton email address with the above, then if you switch to something else thats not proton, yoymu just deregister it and bring it with you to the next one. No changing logins, no changing email addresses with everything. Just a smooth port.
Mailbox.org is currently the best alternative. I think they will resolve your issue.
Love Mailbox. Their website is horrible but once you connect your email to your local applications it’s perfect.
What application do you like?
Mail on iPhone Thunderbird on Linux
I’ve just switched. I’m using Betterbird on Linux and FairEmail on Graphene.
Fiddling with Inbox PGP with Mailbox Guard and other settings at the moment.
Proton does make it easier.
The website is horrific and not being able to find what I want on there is what is putting me off switching to them right now
It’s easy to find what you want, the website is simply slow.
Maybe I’m just being blind then. I can deal with slow I just didn’t find what I wanted and the search in the help section didnt help.
I’ll give it another chance and have a look. I just barely know what I’m doing with custom domains yet as this is my first forray and so may have been looking at what I needed and didnt realise :)
Post here if you get stuck. Others will help.
I’m in the process of moving from Proton to mailbox.org and found the information I needed in the knowledge base (and a little googling to clarify how their instructions relate to my domain provider).
I don’t play well with clients - I prefer webmail. Mailbox.org is better than Tuta but yea, it’s not 5 stars. Although I am planning on having whatever service I land on host the mail and use Nextcloud’s email so it’s kind of what you said anyway.
Posteo?
Posteo.
It doesn’t look bad but 3 aliases free and no custom domain AFAIK
Yeah, that was the deal breaker for me too
If you can’t find a better email service, I’d recommend using addy.io for aliasing.
I decided to go with the custom domain route and I’m still transitioning from SimpleLogin aliases to my own domain. I need domain support

Fastmail
Using it for 2 or so years now, never had problems
If proton works great for you, use it. But stay alert.
Otherwise, i would give tuta a chance. There’s also infomaniak.
Funny, i like Tuta’s UI more than Protons UI.
I wish it was a little modern
Yeah that’s true. I would also like a oled dark mode.
Material Design 3 with dynamic color would be great!
I also wish “Tuta Mail” was mail only… “Tuta calendar” is kinda useless since the mail app does the same thing
I self host but I used namecheap’s private email before and it was fine: https://www.namecheap.com/hosting/email/
Namecheap has gotten into hot water for some israel stuff
I hadn’t heard of this, reading about it now. If you’re referring to the same thing, it seems they refused DNS service for a website that hosted videos showing extreme violence, because it violated their ToS. If they really did not release the domain immediately, that’s a bit questionable, but personally I don’t think it’s a big scandal or anything, as far as tech companies go.
I Had No issues with Mailbox. I think it will be resolved Just fine in your favour
I am Happy With their product. Maybe you experienced a hiccup.
The fact that I have to process a manual payment every month is pretty bad. Also, they just seem to have issues with most American debit or credit cards - I could only get one to work without “Unknown Error” every time. Then the billing error where I paid, received 3 separate confirmation emails and 3 days later they restricted my account for non payment.
You don’t have to do a monthly manual payment, I buy a few years at a time (USA) and they email me when it’s getting low. Not sure what billing issues you’re seeing but that sounds v annoying
Ah okay. I didn’t know that. I paid for a whole year, but I’m living in the EU where the acceptance of some pay methods might be easier
Soverin
I use Posteo, but Thundermail seems okay (if you can overlook Mozilla).
besides taking money from Google, is there other issues with Mozilla?
They seem pretty down with AI, they lay off their employees way more than they should, and they leech off of open-source contributions.
It may be a non-profit, but the people in charge of it seem suspiciously wealthy.
