nato is an existential threat and nato’s only major member is fostering political unrest and color revolutions in russia’s neighbors like it’s done (and admitted to doing in writing, 25 years after the fact) to the entire world.

NATO is only a threat to Russia if Russia invades a NATO member. It’s a defensive alliance. In point of fact, at one point, NATO was exploring the possibility of inviting Russia into NATO.

It is true that the purpose was rather bastardized when the US used A5 to call up NATO for the (now obviously catastrophic and ill-advised) Afghanistan invasion. But A5 in the context of using it to invading a terroristic failed state is fundamentally different from the context of using it to invade a nuclear peer power. The latter would simply never be done, baring the outbreak of an actual third world war (in which case, all bets are obviously off).

      Some questions for you:

      • do you understand what the process for joining NATO is?
      • do you understand what the invocation criteria of A5 are?
      • why do you think Poland applied to join NATO in the first place?
      • why do you think the Baltic states applied to join NATO in the first place?
      • why do you think Finland and Sweden applied to and joined NATO recently, and why do you think they rushed to do it so quickly?
