To know enough about copyright to be concerned about it using a character IP in your works but to know so little about it as to think maybe SpongeBob has entered the public domain by now is a very very narrow subsection of people.
Don’t say 1999 like that is ancient. Also, there’s only like 30 people that were alive when most things finally entering the public domain came out. If anyone over the age of 7 thinks that Steamboat Willie and SpongeBob are remotely comparable in age, they have no sense at all.
