I love Gil-Scot Heron, but I think space exploration is essential. Although perhaps he’s not discounting space exploration as a whole, but rather stating that it sucks that whities would rather leave the planet than help their fellow man.
I think we need to spend some more time looking down at what we can fix here before we can look to the stars with anything other than a colonizer mindset. Space is just going to be commodified for the ultra rich and any benefit the exploration of it might give will, as with all things, never actually “trickle down” to the poor of the earth.
Yeah, that’s the trajectory we’re on, for sure. But how long do we have until Earth is literally cooked?
This is the angle I take, and the reason I will always remain enthusiastic RE: space exploration.
However, I don’t go advocating for it in the same way I do more “surface-level” issues. My voice is better used in fixing the problems down here, yes, but I’m still supportive of space science, discoveries, and their ancillary contributions to science down here.
