It’s synonymous with cinemas. Might be an Aussie/British English thing.
They might’ve been making a joke that since it’s an aussie movie rather than an american one, it would be cinemas, whereas “movie theaters” is more of an american thing.
I’m australian myself and I have absolutely no idea which is the norm haha
