News@lemmy.world•Hungary elections live: Orban has conceded defeat after 16 years in power
1·2 days ago-
taking the quality of political discourse from not great to flinging excrement at each other
-
intentionally dividing society, making the two sides more hostile toward each other and making one part scapegoat for the other, to the point of overusing the word ‘traitor’
-
gerrymandering done so extensively that he had to resort to explaining the problems with his very own creation to his voters, because the system magnifies the differences, giving you a 2/3 majority of the seats even by just winning 52%/40% (hence the radical change from government 2/3 to opposition 2/3 over one term).
-
environmental damage to several areas due to covering up the failure of safety measures around various, newly built battery factories. Cadmium, cobalt and similarly dangerous substances seeping into the soil and groundwater.
-
health care system neglected and severely underfunded (soap, toilet paper and/or seats missing from hospitals, workers underpaid, air con not working during the peak summer heat, staffing issues, etc.)
-
education system kept underfunded and dumbed down to get more low skilled workers for the industry
There might be more, but all of the above will take several years (possibly >4 years) to undo, and global economy isn’t helping, either - all this after stealing stellar amounts of money and leaving an empty treasury for the next government. I don’t have high hopes for anyone trying to steer this back from disaster under just one term.

World News@lemmy.world•Hungary’s Tisza plans to amend constitution to block Orbán comebackEnglish
2·3 days agoWell, I’m gonna be honest, we’ve been watching the results with my brother and we were both uncertain until the last moments. News were coming in about the system going down for a firewall update(“yeah, this is when the manipulation happens”), the threat has been there from the beginning because of the GRU members… But we’re both rather relieved.
Now comes 4 years of uneasiness, because while we’re both happy, we’re still ahead of a Pandora’s box.
Does it take small size compact CD discs?
I have never heard of that before (I was born way after that, though). I wonder how such niche things get to lemmy users sometimes.
Wow, this looks like it’s from around the '70s! I wonder what magazine/newspaper it was featured in.

World News@lemmy.world•Hungary’s Tisza plans to amend constitution to block Orbán comebackEnglish
2·10 days agoExcept the polls are showing a much more and consistent opposition lead, and discontent is much higher now due to many factors (but in my opinion it’s mostly the economy, highly affected by global economy).
I’ve been thinking of similarities as well: his daughter & family suddenly moved abroad back then, as well, and some institutes were getting ready for a regime change, similarly to this year. However, this time it can be seen in more places, and there has been a scandal about every other day in the past two weeks.
I’m aware of the hopium effect, and they might as well keep their position (although more likely not with 2/3 majority anymore), but as things are at the moment, if they still get some serious majority then it can only be because of their shady business around the elections: bribes, blackmail and assistance from Russian political actors who have had influenced other elections before.

World News@lemmy.world•Hungary’s Tisza plans to amend constitution to block Orbán comebackEnglish
3·10 days agoThere will be elections next weekend. After 16 years, this is the first time there is an actual chance to remove Orbán from his seat. While the opposition party leader isn’t a cup of marshmallows, either, it might still be possible to stop Putin’s butt plug very soon.
I just can’t wait for them to get to the ad part.

World News@lemmy.world•Hungary’s Tisza plans to amend constitution to block Orbán comebackEnglish
31·10 days agoHe (and his party) has amassed shittons of government money, funneled them into private equities, made a rule about not having to publish what happens to that money, and used it for whatever the government wouldn’t be allowed to. One of his cronies (none other than the ex leader of the National Bank and the minister of economy) was reported to have moved an astronomical amount of valuables to Dubai in literal containers. He also replaced basically everyone in important institutions with his bootlickers.
Just because Orbán gets removed from his seat, it doesn’t mean he still won’t have near infinite wealth and influence to try and get back as hard as he can.
In my language it means “meat taking” or “taking of the meat”.
I just checked. User’s content is severely downvoted more often than not. Links from .ru domain (might not mean anything bad on its own). Consistently crops out the original content creator’s logo before posting Twonks and similar comics. Posts dozens of stuff within an hour or two.
EDIT: +mod history.
I wouldn’t bat an eye looking at these separately. Considering all these at once? Hmmmmm…

I had a feeling (after Luft) - it just looked funny.
