  • Bonus if its pure HTML.

That’s what mine essentially is. I did that myself as well with no past experience and it shows. I’m put off by small businesses with those ultra fancy websites that technically look good but are difficult to navigate and frankly don’t inspire a huge amount of trust. I’m a guy and a van - not a multimillion corporation and I want the website to reflect that as well.

It has a picture of me and some background about what I’m up to and why. There’s pictures of my previous work for reference, a list of examples of work that I do and also what I don’t do, and there’s my pricing and contact information as well as a contact form. That’s it. No fancy animations or graphics. Just labeled buttons and pages with clearly laid out information and pictures.

I even designed my own logo.

  • I went from an employee to self-employed and I didn’t exactly have prior work experience in that particular field (renovation work) but my previous job was kind of related (plumbing).

I shared like 2000 flyers to the houses near me over the first year but had to stop since I’m already over-booked and can’t do more without hiring employees, which I’m not going to do.

It’s not exactly easy but it’s not exceedingly hard either. If it’s something you literally can’t stop thinking about then that’s a good sign. Someone who does it just for money has to work so much harder than someone who has a passion for it - and people notice.

  • First of all, your over-simplification of why the economy is so terrible is almost certainly inaccurate but I’m not even going to get into that as neither of us has the faintest clue of how the economy even works.

Secondly, I don’t think that’s what people mean by “being stupid” with their money. It’s more about buying things because you want rather than need them which is something we all do to some degree. Only buying what you need would basically mean living in a tent by a campfire eating canned beans. When people tell that to you it’s not to win an argument but to end it. They don’t want to hear it. It’s not like they don’t know what they’re doing.
