My priority: A new railway bill. Mandate passenger trains having right-of-way over freight, and create a new infrastructure manager tasked to buy/seize, develop and improve railways for passenger or passenger-freight dual use (or +military for triple use) and create a usable national network.

And some good ideas on ID alternatives from the same thread here to consider: Transperancy on what data was used to determine the kind of ad you’re seeing, clearer marking of sponsorships/ad placement, legal frameworks to have tech companies change to have LLMs cite sources more accurately to reduce misinformation.

CPTPP should exclude both USA and China, the agreement should be between the world’s middle powers. Other applicants are definitely welcome.

I’m not against trading with China, but we should not let this particular agreement burgeon into one dominated by one of the parties. Each country should develop trading relationships with China and US as they see fit whether individually or as a regional bloc, but free trade, movement and policy alignment in the way CPTPP intends should be reserved to among equals.

I can understand that, but to me they are at least loosely linked. Poor tone clouds a good argument and often is an indicator of a discussion in bad faith.

I will admit I have seen a handful of counter-examples over 3 years on Lemmy, where one or two commentors came out of the gate with an angry and accusatory stance, but both were able to reconcile with each other in later replies with cooler heads. I have more often seen much longer threads where flamebait begets a flamewar without going anywhere useful.

My information is based on this portion of a CBC Rosemary Barton interview with Kinew on how they plan on implementing the social media ban.

If you know, maybe mom and dad don’t have to be the bad guy, they could just point the finger at the Premier and say it’s his fault - I’m happy if that helps the average family out there.

And then just when it comes to implementation, we’ll be working over the next few months with families and teachers in the province just to make sure we get the message out. To be absolutely clear, the accountability is not to be on the parents or the family or the kid. The accountability will rest on the big tech platforms. When it comes to parents and kids, our approach will be education. But when it comes to the accountability and living up to this ask, that’s where we will be going to the big tech platforms, most of whom are American.

So what he’s saying doesn’t necessarily preclude age verification, but the principal emphasis seems to be on normalizing social media free schools and homes than prescribing a verification policy. We’ll see Saturday if it’s anything more than that. I’ll come back and say I’m wrong if such a ban comes with prescriptive age verification.

I think the NDP approach is the ideal one. We don’t need to legislate a requirement for mass age tracking and surveillance, but we need to give parents and schools the appropriate tools and a legal reason to keep kids away from big tech, and penalties for companies that through dark patterns entice kids and teens to be addicted to their platform.

Yeah absolutely there’s a lot of topics and subjective stuff where agreement to disagree can happen. Being capable of admitting wrong is different than readily admitting wrong at the first disagreement and I do not expect that, but there’s a stubborn kind of tone that I can tell someone will not consider any contrary evidence, which lessens the need to continue the conversation.

I will defend someone who says something I don’t agree with, if they’re being respectful and willing to admit they are wrong or open to changing their mind.
