I heard somewhere that an easy way to try is with cashiers or other staff. You got 30 seconds to chat and if you mess it up you’ve already got an out and can walk away. Just read the room and make sure they aren’t crazy busy of course

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you still listen to the radio?English
5·20 days agoYes! There one locally owned station in particular that seems to be thriving. It has no blocks of ads and real DJs. They always seem to be playing new stuff, and they even host small concerts for local artists and guests. They also stream at their site, thesummit.fm
Between them and The Alternation, which is another locally owned station that plays alternative rock, everything else in the area is iHeart Radio blandness. You know the type. Constant ads, playing the same songs over and over, morning shows etc
Yep
I read an article saying that as an adult you stop doing as many unique and memorable things as an adult. It’s mostly the same places, people and things. So when you go do different things and make memories, you’ll have more “milestones” in your life

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Are defense attorneys ‘good people’?English
1·29 days agoLook at how many arrests take place in the US. Basic googling gives me 10mil in 2019.
People love to talk shit on how bad police departments are. So how many people got arrested and accused of something they truly didn’t do? Who’s gonna help them?
That’s why. Their job is to provide pushback, to play devils advocate to make sure a case is more than just blind accusations. A defense attorney is there to keep a prosecution from turning into a witch hunt.

Bicycles@lemmy.ca•How can I properly store a bicycle in a barn?English
1·29 days agoKeeping it out of the sun and rain are the biggest things, then maybe a tarp or other cover to keep dust off. I’ve stored my marlin in a similar situation for several years (riding regularly) with no noticable issues.

Comic Strips@lemmy.world•If There Was A Button That Made Everyone AmishEnglish
1·8 months agoI’ve seen Amish:
Burn chemicals and paints in a pile behind their shop
Have dumpsters full of plastic “sawdust” from a shop that makes plastic furniture
Rebrand cheap chinese electronics and batteries to sell in their communities (MillerTech)
Zip around on a one wheel
Ride electric scooters
Log out relatively pristine forest to make more farms
Log land that isn’t theirs, without permission, for weeks before being discovered and confronted.
Vote down school levies repeatedly until the local schools shut down
Open a retail store in a mall
These days the amish button isn’t nearly as great as you might think…still funny to think about how everyone would react though

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come nobody does anything about North Korea?English
0·10 months agoNukes. We know they have them and missiles to deliver them. Any situation where a wildcard like North Korea uses nukes in any offensive capacity is terrifying. “Nuclear War: A Scenario” is a great modern book on how things could go to hell if one single North Korean nuclear missile is launched towards the United States.
Artillery. In any case of open war on North Korea anyone within artillery range of the NK border will be bombarded with heavy shelling. Even if it lasted for just an hour or two before the batteries were eliminated the civilian casualties and destruction would be like a large natural disaster. Now imagine if chemical shells were added to the mix, because they have those too.
China has the most leverage to help North Korea on a humanitarian and diplomatic level without risking war, so if it could be done the best chance is through them.

The cool thing about transport planes is that they aren’t just useful in war. It’s a big flying box. Sure it could be sending weapons or troops, but it could just as easily be sending doctors or diplomats or vehicles for a security team. Or nothing, but will be used to take stuff out of the region.
You already payed for the A400M, and it’s perfectly suited for sketchy neighborhoods like this since it can carry countermeasures. Why not use it?
