The theatres for music, plays, poetry readings etc. were a completely separate things; build usually in a crescent shape and focused on the acoustics and all that. So the circular roman amphitheaters were made specifically for the other entertainment, that was more about getting as many people as possible to be able to see the stuff instead of hearing. So the first use was most likely some form of gladiator battle or something similar

I agree it’s very cool, yet it almost triggered my migraine at the same time and now I’ll see everything blurry for few hours, so also not cool
It’s pointless, then they go on a tangent about how it’s the word of god etc. To them god is real and everything is about god and if they have to make leaps in logic it’s just because mere people can’t understand god’s will

2·3 days agoI’d imagine the fear is just because a lot of people are not tech savvy at all and tend to be scared of new things, “googling” and pushing colorful buttons is something most people are used to, but writing phrases you don’t fully understand into a mysterious text box is not. Though personally I have no fear towards terminal either, so maybe I’m wrong with that analysis

4·4 days agoOh no it’s not “pins and needles” it’s just disgust, I have hypersensitivity to touch in general and touching humans is basically just the worst of it for some reason. A bit like you’d step on dog shit or touch something rotting etc. I get the shivers and all that, it’s terrible. If I don’t get the unpleasant touch to stop quick enough, eventually I go crazy and will struggle like a rabid animal, since it’s so intolerable - I know because I’ve gotten to that point couple times by trying jeans on… I don’t know why or how my own limbs can trigger this shit as well, it’s just my stupid corpse being shitty I guess. I can’t do breathing exercises or mindfulness stuff either, because becoming even more aware of my body makes it so much worse

2·4 days agoWorse, the panel is actively bothersome. If you are left handed and use touch screen, the damn panel will constantly and randomly jump out since it’s located in the left corner. And of course you can’t disable or move it. That alone would have been enough for me to throw 11 into the trash where it belongs

11·4 days agoUnderstandable, yes! I lack that too though, I just don’t like to be touched nor touch others, and I do not desire it either. I do like to pet… or I guess more like poke and pat animals (though there’s specific conditions for what type of fur I will tolerate touching), but that’s about it. I can hug my dog but that’s about the extend of it. I also have problems with my own limbs touching each other or my torso which causes more issues honestly. “Touch starved” is something I simply don’t understand lmao

22·4 days agoI can! I’m disgusted by other people touching me. I’m more like those shy cats that hide under the furniture if you try to pet them, and only come hang out next to you if you leave them alone

62·4 days agoThere are about 30 different ways to do any single thing and whatever way you choose is guaranteed to provoke 17 neckbeards into writing essays on why you’re wrong and, while they’re at it, you also picked the wrong distro.
My favorite one is
“Oh linux is easy these days, you don’t have to even open the terminal”
“Haha noob why did you install the flatpak version, never do that, always install everything as .debs through terminal”
Seriously though, if someone doesn’t want to have a carnivore as a pet, just don’t get one then, there’s plenty of animals that make great pets and are also “vegan”. Rabbits for example are really personable and can be a great alternative as a free roaming house pet
Yeah hieroglyphs don’t record vowel sounds, so on many accounts we don’t actually know how something was pronounced. There’s good guesses made based on later phonetics, but there’s unavoidably also stuff that’s just forever lost. Latin is way easier because we can just use the church latin pronunciation that still survives, don’t even need to go for the classical one. It’s not like average people know the difference anyway

11·5 days agoI slept on a sofa for over five years because of this basically (though the reason stems from something different). I figured if I don’t do a sleeping routine I can just pretend I’m not going to sleep and then eventually “take a nap” on the sofa after browsing the internet for some hours. That has worked well, even though it’s against all the sleep hygiene advice stuff, but hey whatever works… I only stopped sleeping on the sofa since we moved and I could make a nest in the closet
Yeah even after major surgeries they usually try to get you up and moving as quickly as possible. If you just lay down your muscles will atrophy quick, and the scars inside and outside can more easily form in ways that might cause huge problems later on, or simply just restrict your movement. Moving also helps your guts work, fluids flow, and the usual processes working kinda means the healing will kick in too

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Lemmy's political discourse when Republicans gutted the Voting Rights Act yesterday:
3·5 days agoHonestly it baffles me how all these discussions spiral to focus only on major elections. If you want the system to change, don’t wait until you have only the option to vote between lesser and greater evil ffs. You need to work from the roots up if there’s to be any change - and the must be done if you want a revolution too! And yet here we are, tons of accounts just whining how you shouldn’t vote for evil. No shit, but whatcha gonna do about it, other than let the child raping genocider take over? Encourage people to take action on their local level, don’t cry and fight and make even more people disengage with your country’s politics
I’m inclined to think there’s way too many morons on lemmy since not all of these can be bots or russian shills, can they?! And I’m not usaian so this is 100% just an outsider observations through discussions here. I even actively try to avoid reading these but there’s just too many
insisting that allistic people can just be besties with autistic people is a pipe dream
Oh yeah definitely, things like these depend on the personalities, and at least in my experience us autistic folks tend to just clash with most allistic people. Not with everyone, but it’s a lot harder to find any circles you can fit into… Anyway things could still be better than they are now, if autistic traits weren’t seen as such weaknesses, which increases how badly we are perceived socially. The modern times are a terrible match! For example in one book from 1800s written by a relatively low-class person from my country there was a description of a person that pretty clearly was on the spectrum, but they weren’t described harshly at all. Just told to be an excellent worker, even if a bit strange for wanting to just spend all summers working in the forest alone.
Of course things have been pretty terrible for “low-functioning” people through recent history (we do have evidence at least some ancient tribes took care of their disabled so who can say if we go back enough), but I’ll argue that this development where autistic traits are becoming just a liability is very recent. Hell, when I was in university I could do fairly well because I could just read books and then write essays on them and pass courses, but some years after they changed that and now those require group-work and I would fail all of them.
Even though it’s true the “bridge” between autistic and allistic cannot be erased, it does not have to be so damn long

Oh the taiwan-person! I recognize them too, I never remember their username but the flag always sticks out to me for some reason
That’s pretty much it. They’re not pack animals but community? colony? animals. They need their space but want company as well, so enough space and resources and the drama isn’t that bad (but there will be drama though). It also depends on personalities, some of them just never get along with others. My old boy was such a jerk I could not have a companion for him, I was also the only human who dared to touch and handle that beast lmao. 6kg of murder. Oh I miss him so dearly

This makes me uncontrollably angry. You just don’t kill trees without a good reason, and this is a horrible reason! Absolutely disgusting
