Francis Thackeray, in his 2025 article, suggests Sir Francis Drake could have acquired it when sailing in the area. Since traces of it were also discovered in 1600s Milan its possible that the spanish were circulating it. This 2024 study discusses how the Spanish at least knew of it as early as 1499.
Here’s the paper for anyone interested. TLDR: In 2001 cocain residue was found alongside tobacco and hemp residue. There were also refrences to drugs in art and poems that the author supposes are cocain and cannabis. Fastwarward to 2023 when traces of cocain THC & CBD were found in bones from Milan. Today the author of the 2001 study is using the 2023 results to support his findings. As far as I can tell no one else has tried to test the pipe fragments.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•At what point does a person become an "adult"?English
2·6 days agoUntil relatively recently, in common law and some civil law countries you weren’t fully autonomous from your gaurdian until you turned 21. At which point you no longer needed a gaurdians approval to make some legally binding decisions. Some institutions (eg car rental & insurance companies) find 25 to be the cut off for risky behavior. However, these measures don’t capture emotional maturity as I’ve met people in their 50s that still act like teenagers.

13·7 days agoSTALKER 1979 based on the sifi novel Roadside Picnic, and was the inspiration for the video game series of the same name. It reminded me of Annihiliation 2018 but less horror/action, and more lamentations on humanity.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think of homeschooling?English
7·7 days agoEvery homeschooled person I’ve met has lacked all tact but YMMV. I haven’t met anyone that was homschooled after leaving university so no clue if that improves over time.
Aside from the aforementioned risk of birth defects there are no ‘other problems’ other than being outside of social norms. It could be argued that the bans of these marriages in the US were motivated not by science but a desire to more quickly assimilate immigrants. Essentially boiling down to xenophobia if not racism.

Its real, poor guy. Second to last entry.

The cat one is the original since the proportions, and fur are wrong on the racoon. Not to mention it looks like the racoon has a cat paws rather than little grabby hands.
Was the skeleton disarticulated? If not then the rabbit most likely wasn’t killed by predetors or scavenged. If it was hunted you’d see bones scattered and quite a few missing. We have foxes, hawks, and coyotes in our area and every now and then we find bits and pieces of their leftovers in the yard and on the porch but never the whole thing.
John Conway and CM Koseman did modern animals drawn like dinosaur illustrations. I can’t find the original posts but here’s a buzzfeed article with a good assortment, including a reptilian rendition of a cat.
Last time I saw yolo used was by crypto bros/wallstreetbet types making bad financial decisions.
Wild turkeys teach their young, through demonstration, how to forage, and avoid dangers. For a domesticated turkey poult the human takes the role of the parent & teacher. To top it off the wild turkey hasn’t lost its instincts through selective breeding like the domesticated turkey.

2·19 days agoA college rendition of Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot. The first half was a little slow but the second half picked up considerably. Before that was A Lucky Stiff; it was quite silly but a fun watch.

Contamination may actually be a concern here since AFAIK no independent analysis of the clay pipe fragments or the bones has been done yet, but it’d have to be 2 coked up pothead lab techs since the clay pipe fragments were tested in a police narcotics lab in South Africa while the bones were tested at the excavation site in Milan.
