i hear owls occasionally, but i’ve only been lucky enough to stumble upon and actually see one in the field. it was such a great experience. glad you had a chance to see a short-eared!

the clapping behavior is not something i was aware of. so cool! so he’s demonstrating his prowess in flight? mating behaviors are so interesting. every march i go out hoping to witness a woodcock skydance, but apparently they’re my nemesis bird.

please don’t get me wrong. i’m not saying i think the photo is llm generated or anything. the owl just look sort of like it belongs in hyrule or some other mythical place. the face is mask-like.

maybe it’s the golden glow of the light, but this owl doesn’t even look real.

there are always bees in the banana stand.

deadly predators and super cute. quite the power couple.

just one more reason why, if the roadless rule goes away in the u.s., it will be bad for all of us.

lol my first thought was about how gritty this seemed. that owl could be the protagonist of a noir detective novel.

what good friends! the ant for considering the snail’s mobility restrictions, the snail for devoting two months of its life to get there.

wrens always seem kind of comically serious to me. our red-bellieds are often fencing with the starlings that descend on the suet. disadvantage: starlings. the downy has a harder time and has to pick her battles.

this is the first i’ve heard of flamebacks. what an impressive image you’ve captured! i’ve definitely grown to love woodpeckers since I started birding. pileateds are fairly common (but always a treat) near me. it’s also been a pleasure watching the adult downy and red-bellies bring their juveniles to our suet feeder. we have two young red-bellies who are regulars and their red feathers are just starting to come in!

i share your anxiety for the future of wildlife. habitat is so reduced for so many species and it seems like that situation is only deteriorating.

re: the people with their feet on the gas pedal of capitalism, I feel like they know they’ll benefit either way. they can pollute and raise the temperature as much as they need to to fill their bottomless pockets and when the climate makes major adaptations necessary they can profit from that as well (not to mention water and food rationing as a means of control). this doesn’t take into account the dominionists who want to “bring about the end times”. I hate thinking things are just going to get even more dystopian but that’s the trend I see. I wish more people were worried.

in the u.s., the democrats’ best response so far has been tepid support of a “green new deal” that doesn’t go nearly hard enough.

sorry if I got off track. the woodpecker image is amazing. I hadn’t heard of the imperial woodpecker before. I see pileateds now and then and am always in awe. like, that creature definitely evolved from dinosaurs. I love their manic chuckling!

why does this story sound so familiar? I know it’s not one-to-one but there are some real parallels here. i hope this program is successful.
