Digital devices will always be a potential distraction, even with just simple calling and messaging. What amazes me most though, is how far we’ll stretch to avoid regulating the actual actors causing the most harm (social media).


The only drawback is that most smart home devices aren’t on the UPS, so if power goes out, you still lose most connected devices.


I run many of the usual suspects, but I would say Home Assistant is on the top of the list.


I’m well aware of how heat pumps work. What I meant by that was that some electrical grids, like Saskatchewan, for example, have a high GHG intensity. So, despite a heat pump’s high efficiency, it can still result in higher overall GHG emissions than if the same amount of heat were delivered by burning natural gas in a condensing furnace.
Now Saskatchewan has been making good progress on cleaning up their grid, so it might not quite be the case now, but energy and GHG modelling I did a couple years ago showed just the case above.


Unfortunately, Trump’s walls don’t contain pollution, and industries use that local lack of regulation to lobby other governments, as in, “look, we can do that in the US, why can’t we do it here?”


Heat pumps aren’t a very effective solution. Depending on generation source, the electricity a heat pump uses to heat could be dirtier than the fuel that would otherwise be burned.
A better solution is to first reduce demand. For existing buildings, start with improving airtightness and reducing summer solar gain (add shading), then insulate where practical (following good building science), and only after that, modify mechanical systems to suit the new, reduced demand. New buildings take the same approach.


It’s not so different from professional exams in Canada/Untied States. Applicants with some wealth to put into a tutor are often more successful, while also requiring a not insignificant fee to write the exam, effectively gatekeeping professional colleges from the less well-off.
E: to clear up some confusion…there is a fee paid by the person taking/writing/being assessed by the exam. Apparently the meaning ‘to write’ an exam is not consistent, but I intended the Canadian/British English meaning.


He’s also decimated environmental regulation…so, definitely not a huge favour.

Looks like there is Fauxx-Desktop that you could probably run on your pi-hole machine.


Anecdotal, but I’ve been using Fauxx for a month or two and have noticed that ads I see (those few that manage to get through my blockers) are more generic, don’t apply to my demographic, or are even in a language I don’t speak.
I do practice basic data privacy, but I think that data poisoning also has a positive impact in obscuring your digital footprint. There will always be data from when I was less privacy-minded, so I feel it’ll be more effective to both create a vacuum and fill that void with junk data.
