I normally use NixOS but recently tried out PikaOS on one of my machines and I love it. Sure it’s got a gaming focus but it’s fast. damn fast. makes my dev work a breeze. It feels like one of the most complete Linux distros I’ve ever used. takes all of 15min to install and you can be up and running with everything you need within 30min. And their Pikman package manager is one of the best I’ve ever used. has distrobox built into it so if I want to install something from Arch, or the AUR, or Fedora, or whatever I just do “pikman --aur install whatever” spins up a distrobox, automatically exports it, good to go. Also has one of the fastest startups I’ve ever experienced that it felt like I wasn’t on systemd. Like Void runit start up speed.

If there are people who want something like Bazzite or Nobara but want a lot more flexibility for packages than PikaOS is it.

as someone who uses NixOS I wouldn’t recommend NixOS. sure it makes the hard things easy but it makes the easy things hard.

Then you potentially fall into the trap of configuration hell where you’re just constantly tinkering to get that sweet spot. I have to take vacations from NixOS otherwise I wouldn’t get any work done. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE it but it’s not for everyone.

I use radio.garden every day. When I work I like listening to trance and EDM and there’s no better stations to listen to that stuff than random ones in Germany or Belgium.

I also like listening to Post-Hardcore music and Russian stations have that stuff in spades. really quality stuff even from bands I haven’t heard in years.

it’s a weird distro for sure. it’s kinda all over the place with stuff. for example on the distro itself they recommend installing Cosmic-Store as your package manager even if you’re not using Cosmic. they also use Nemo and a few other GNOME things baked in if your running the Niri or Hyprland iso. it’s odd. Add to the fact like i said if you want to remove Kitty you cana potentially break your system especially if you have an Nvidia GPU as it’s also baked into it for some reason.

This as opposed to Nobara where you can literally use the officiall or KDE iso version and then completely remove Plasma in favor of a WM and you’re fine.

CachyOS is a good option. maybe not as a brand new person to Linux but it’s fast and has everything you need.

Bazzite is fine too if you just depend on flatpaks which might make a windows to linux transition easier.

I’m currently trying PikaOS for the week and it’s ok. It’s fast, games as well if not ever so slightly better than CachyOS, but it feels a little TOO opinionated. For example if you install the Niri version (and I assume the hyprland version also) Kitty is baked into it to the point were potentially removing kitty breaks other dependencies. I don’t like that. Kitty is a bloated mess of a terminal and I’d much rather use Foot. Also the Pikabar thing is garbage. it’s a fork of Noctalia with ALL the options stripped out of it for whatever reason. But PikaOS is very easy to install and fairly minimal with what it does install. It’s nice but it’s kinda all over the place with things.

I’ll probably just end up going back to NixOS in a week anyways.

bingo. the Mongol Empire lasted less than 90 years. A flash in the pan in terms of world history. she’s a teacher…that’s what scares me more. she’s teaching kids. And the even MORE scary thing is she hates kids. she refuses to have her own because, and I quote, she “can’t stand children”. Essentially she’s good at cramming/studying the lesson plans and then info dumping it on the kids. Now trying to get her to actually understand or teach you what’s she’s actually dumped onto the kids well after the fact? good luck. I tried that once. One week she taught the kids some subject on earth science, tectonic plates I believe, I asked her a week later at a family dinner about it because she brought it up. she couldn’t explain it. it was out of her mind already.
