I got 16 gb on my W11 laptop, and I’m regularly bouncing off the 13 gb point where swap/ compression/ whatever kicks in and shit gets slow, doing relatively benign shit like browsing the web, YouTube and Gmail open, and vscode running working on some python shit. On 8 gb I’d probably have to use my phone for everything except vscode to get it to fit. It’s not the lightest possible workload, but it shouldn’t be slamming swap so regularly.

No that makes a ton of sense. I do definitely worry that you’re taking on too many complex adjacent things at once then. I myself use docker containers inside WSL to do dev work with Git and all these various things on a daily basis, but it took me a few years to feel comfortable like this. I think I would suggest you focus on the coding (python, javascript, etc etc) first and if it’s something that you can do in windows using just vscode, thats going to have less friction than trying to learn git at the same time as trying to learn command-line Linux. And once you feel comfortable with vscoding in windows, swap over to vscode in wsl, that way the IDE (vscode) is still familiar, but now you’re layering on the next level. And honestly, Git is pretty low on the stuff to learn. I know entire companies that do software version ingredients and sharing via email (aka, when Bob updates code he and Alice both use, he just emails her a copy) crazy, but it works for them.

On the other hand, this Odin project looks pretty well set up so that maybe after a couple weeks of feeling terrible, you pop out on the other side where it took me years to get to!

Can you explain what your overall goal is? By the looks of your recent post history, you seem to be overloading with new things. I would mention, if you’re just trying to learn git, there are windows ways you use git, so you don’t also have to learn Linux at the same time. I used tortoisegit for a long time, and github has an app. If you’re trying to learn programming in general, I would just use vscode in windows and not worry about git yet. Do you have a concrete idea of where you want to be in X time?

What? I think we’re saying the same thing. I’m saying it’s anti immigrant bullshit, with a focus on asylum seekers first (specifically called out to end asylum and family reunification first), that certainly come from non-white (non-european?) countries primarily, even though cutting asylum approvals to 0 10 years ago wouldnt stop them hitting 10 million by 2050. Could be a challenge of who scores better on a citizenship test, or something else. But the winner takes the Swiss citizenship and the lower takes the other citizenship.

Big fan of Big Vegan Flavor, we signed up for her ‘year of meal plans’ thing and now if we don’t know what we want for the week yet before going shopping we just pick one that sounds good and the shopping list is already made. Not technically a cookbook though, I guess.

I had the f12 developer console thing open recently when I went to do a Google search and was blown away that a basic Google search has over 12 megabytes of network traffic flying around. My ad blockers and such blocked most of it, so it’s clearly not required.

As someone who has both worked at pizza shops and eaten a lot of what pizza shops think are ‘good’ vegan pizza, respectfully, pizza shops are some of the worst at developing vegan pizzas I’ve ever seen. Most homemade vegan pizzas are twice as good as what you can get out and about. They aren’t trying. They say to themselves “vegan cheese?! Nasty!” Then think they’re in any position to develop a good product.
