Tbf eating an onion like an apple would imply leaving the skin on. Eating an onion like an orange would make more sense if youre taking off the outside
You’re right, and I actually thought about that. But that’s the way I’ve always heard it described (and yes, it has come up before) so I just went with it. Orange is maybe better, but you don’t peel an orange and then just bite into it, you eat it section by section. Banana would work but the difference in shape makes it weird. Not sure there’s a great analogue

It’s actually funny how common the saying eating an onion “like an apple” is! I’ve heard it a bunch too. Same size of object, I guess.
