Charlton Farm Produce owner David Addison said that Abbott’s consumption of the onion “put us off guard a bit”, and that “I mean, I’m an onion grower, so occasionally I see people eat them. But you don’t really expect the PM to walk in, bite on an onion and eat it, leaf and all.

    From the wiki

    And of course, the video.

At first I was “lots of cultures eat raw onions. It pairs great with raw kibbeh and some spicy foods.” Then I saw the reptilian eat a bite of it with the peel on, trying its best to look human and miserably failing. Good call, Australia.

Tbf eating an onion like an apple would imply leaving the skin on. Eating an onion like an orange would make more sense if youre taking off the outside

You’re right, and I actually thought about that. But that’s the way I’ve always heard it described (and yes, it has come up before) so I just went with it. Orange is maybe better, but you don’t peel an orange and then just bite into it, you eat it section by section. Banana would work but the difference in shape makes it weird. Not sure there’s a great analogue

It’s actually funny how common the saying eating an onion “like an apple” is! I’ve heard it a bunch too. Same size of object, I guess.

There’s actually someone else in this post who uses the same terminology!

Did we name a farm after him like we named a swimming pool after a prime minister that drowned?

My grandpa used to do that. He’d at least remove the dry skin first though, before chomping it down like an apple.

fairly common practice in farm country, I know plenty of old folks that did this regularly, but yes… they peeled it.

  • I had a friend in a high school who hated onions and his dad would sometimes come in his room while we were hanging out and be like “Hey, Travis, look.” Then when he looked, his dad would take a huge bite out of a raw onion which would make my friend gag.

He didn’t do it with the skin on, tho.

Well, that rabbit hole was fun!

Gotta say, the man is a right cunt, and not the good kind of cunt.

But the onion thing? Baller move, and his explanation of it was legit.

On the Wikipedia page someone linked, he says that we eat raw onion regularly, like in salads, so just biting one isn’t going to be any worse. And he also said that the farmer was proud of his crop, so it seemed like the right thing to do. And I can get behind that concept.

Again though, it’s the broken clock thing. Something is wrong with him, and not because he likes onions. He reminds me of rfk jr tbh. Saying and doing shit that’s just wrong so boldly that is approaches absurdity.

An onion is food, he ate the food, he enjoyed it.

Some people eat the apple core.

    Some people eat chicken bones.

Some people eat Casu marzu, don’t search this, if you don’t know what it is.

Some people eat balut, same warning.

It’s just an onion, why are people so fucking sensitive about what other people eat?

When you started listing gross things people eat, I was wondering if you were gonna mention balut. I don’t like to yuck someone’s yum, but 🤮

I’ll heed your warning to not look up casu marzu

don't read while eating, hint: fly larva in cheese

The larvae of the cheese fly (Piophila casei) are deliberately introduced to pecorino cheese, where their digestive action produces an advanced level of fermentation, including a breakdown of the cheese’s fats. The cheese’s texture softens, and a liquid called làgrima (‘teardrop’) may seep out.

It’s eaten with the maggots still in it

Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed,[7][14] diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping.[11][12]

Once upon a time it was enough to behave a bit silly to lose your seat on the politics. Today, not so much. And not just in the US, seems to be pretty global thing.

You can still lose your seat by being a bit weird or off-putting. The problem is that a large amount of people don’t find bigotry and corruption to be weird and off-putting.

Today in the United States, I’d love to have more videos of my alleged representatives eating the same produce I’m feeding to mine. Ideally they’d be able to spell potato along the way too, but I’ll take what I can get.
