Hell even India has a pretty shitty history with Hindu nationalists starting out with Mahatma Ghandi and his religious zeal leading directly to the bloody conflict and genocides between Pakistan and India when they just got their independence from the British. Religion is and has always been the great divider, and the few times someone with religious convictions tries to use that force for unity with other groups it is coopted and perverted in less than a generation.
