For those landlubbers without their sea legs… naval ships of the Napoleonic period had most of their guns stationary on each side of the hull, meaning they can’t really be independently aimed. The position of the ship dictates the position you’re firing at. Pushing through the Franco-Spanish fleet meant that the British fleet had a very ‘target-rich environment’ as they passed through and could fire from either side, while the Franco-Spanish fleet could only focus fire from one side, as the Brits approached, and then only auxiliary guns (or trying to maneuver into a better position) once the Brits were close.
