It’s absolutely ridiculous that someone would threaten to change a tariff regime after negotiating one a few month ago. What’s the point of any agreement with this guy if it’s null and void the moment he changes his mind?
That said (loudly), we need more European digital solution that don’t suck like their American counterparts. Maybe use the money from the digital tax to fund the development and deployment of alternatives to Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Amazon, Google, etc.
I sincerely hope this is what Europe does. Tech is funding fascism around the world, including Europe. If you continue to do nothing, they will continue to turn your people into savage fascists one moron at a time. That’s why right wing nationalists parties keep gaining support all over Europe. They’re using social media, the rest of the internet and what media they control to do this and they control enough. Especially with the help of Israel. Europe must find alternatives and fast.
Ding ding ding, this, there is no use in negotiating with the Orange Turd. It’s useless as he just tramples all over a deal like a petulant child if he doesn’t get his way in future deals. He’s a total imbecile.
I totally agree Europe and Canada, need to work harder on developing our own systems. Current U.S. based search engines are terrible right now.
The deal is already past either way. Court ordered their Tarriffs illegal. Trump declared 30% on all countries through a different law justification. EU said: Then our WIP deal is no better than default - we’re done negotiating until the US can present definite and persistent terms.
Trump has been shifting tariffs willy-nilly since the beginning. By now, every country knows there’s no certainty with any Trump deals.
Europe has been switching away from US tech, and focusing on an open-source approach instead. I don’t think they’ll implement their own social network - that’s not a necessary state asset. But they’ve funded open-source projects that are alternatives. IIRC Lemmy has received funding as well - I may mix up funding collections though.

Or don’t build an alternative EU online cesspool but instead invest the money in education…

To be fair, I just discovered that SMS is now super cool with the added RCS functionality. It feels like an already functional WhatsApp alternative.
I’m now using normal messages with most of my contacts, this is perfect since all of them already have a phone number.
The only problem is that I did not find a Foss app which supports this.
