It’s not even all that weird to think that the Easter Bunny exists, anymore. We’ve all seen furries by now, I think.

1·15 hours agoWell, patents only last for 20 years. I’m sure they have newer processes that have been patented in the last 20 years, but I’m also sure that they are using refineries more than 20 years old.
You made me think about how does a dental hygienist deal with tourniquet fingers all day, and I suspect that they have a way around it.
I don’t know whether this is the correct solution, but I can think of two ways that they hold the floss differently to me. First, they wear gloves, which might protect against damage and provide more grip. Second, they tend to spiral the floss down their fingers, rather than create a complete circle of floss.
Maybe one of those things is an alternate solution. I’ll probably give the spiral thing a go, but I’m probably not going to start wearing gloves to floss.

Nixon was a horrible person who supported moderate conservative policies, despite being far right wing himself.
He believed that the way for conservatives to attract young people was to support some progressive policies. That’s why his administration started the EPA, for example. That’s why he was interested in UBI.
Had Nixon and his entire administration not been embroiled in many different major corruption scandals and forced to resign, we’d have a different conservative party today. Who knows if it would have been better, though.

Any dumb asshole can just go build a wind turbine.
I respectfully disagree. Humans are a part of the universe, and they care about themselves.
I guess if you tend to look at things scientifically, you are more likely to see it as a responsibility. Humans are something that came about in the universe, and we are trying to learn about the universe. Another way of saying that is that we are the universe trying to learn about itself.
Of course, otherwise, even if you didn’t ask to exist, it’s quite presumptuous of you to make that decision for everybody else. If you’re going to judge civilization for bringing about your situation, it seems hypocritical for you to think it’s okay to make a different decision unilaterally.
For whatever reason, my parents never explicitly taught me how to floss. Now that my mother is elderly and needs help, I had the opportunity to observe her floss, and she did the most bizarre thing.
Rather than cut off a long length of floss before flossing, she held the container of floss in one hand and then flossed using only the little bit of floss needed at the time, kept pulling it out as she needed more, and then cut off the floss after flossing.
I couldn’t decide if she was crazy or a genius, so I tried it myself. I still ended up using about the same amount of floss, but I think her method would be superior in the case where the floss broke during flossing. Otherwise, it’s more of a hassle, so I don’t do it. But I think if I was just used to flossing that way, it would have no downsides.
The premise is only true if people, or even animals, never get hit by trolleys unless they are tied to the tracks. But we know this not to be the case.
Without civilization, there would be nobody to judge civilization, either.
I recently heard a science popularizer like Neil deGrasse Tyson or maybe Brian Cox talking about tangents to the Fermi Paradox. Essentially, even if intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, it’s possible that we’re the only scientifically advanced intelligent civilization in the Milky Way galaxy. As long as we don’t know otherwise, it’s not a terrible assumption.
But anyways, if we do happen to be the only intelligent civilization in the Milky Way, it’s quite a responsibility. It’s a shame that we seem to be racing towards our own doom. We should be doing whatever we can to save our civilization. Of course, it may be that most civilizations that reach this point destroy themselves.

0·4 days agoThe text of the constitution sort of assumes that Americans wouldn’t elect a person who cannot be trusted at all.
The people who wrote and signed the constitution, on the other hand, believed that people would try to seize personal power, and many even believed that George Washington would try to make himself king.
There are all sorts of meditations, so there are probably types of meditation where you pay attention to the voice in your head.
However, the most common types of meditation are specifically to ignore and let go of your inner voice by focusing on something else. So, if you’re paying attention to the voice in your head, you have most likely misunderstood the assignment.

I got one a few years ago that had a setting to automatically go to a specified input when the TV started (similar to how normal TVs used to work).
My only mistake was leaving the TV connected to the network, as it updated and caused some hassle recently.
