2·10 days agoI love your telling of the story but there is one very inconvenient detail.
They definitely weren’t alone on the ISS, there was a full complement of crew from both Dragon and Soyuz in the station with them
Liberalism is a political tradition that dates at least to the enlightenment era. One of the defining characteristics of liberalism is the emphasis on the individual. This makes it highly compatible with capitalism, in fact, I would call Liberalism the state religion of Capital.
As the dominant political and intellectual tradition in the west for centuries, it can be difficult to even imagine a politics not built around fighting over different flavors of liberalism.
In my opinion, there’s a huge gap between the values liberalism espouses in theory (individual liberty, human rights, self-determination) and what we actually see in practice (slavery, fascism, imperialism, ecocide, genocide, world war).
Of course, committed liberals view fascism as outside of their tradition, whereas their ideological opponents generally regard fascism as an extension of liberal ideology. This quickly devolves into a No True Scotsman debate.
I’m pretty sure they are referring to imperialism as defined by Lenin, as an evolution and natural consequence of capitalism itself.
I think these paragraphs from ProleWiki: Imperialism give a good introduction:
Imperialism is the most recent evolution of the capitalist mode of production that began in the late 1800s to early 1900s, in which monopolies and cartels become the dominant economic force of society
It is a global system of economic, political, and military domination, with the imperialist powers using a variety of means, including economic sanctions, military interventions, and cultural influence to maintain their dominance over other nations.

Memes@lemmy.ml•fascinating subjects worth looking in toEnglish
9·11 days agoI have to agree with you about the substance.
All three of those in the top-level comment are very much “look at the mysterious cabal that controls us using magic technology” vs “look at the obvious and well-documented cabal that controls us in the open” (using money, media and state power)
I do think it’s probably time to retire “conspiracy theorist” though. There are conspiracies out there and they generally get away with it. The aforementioned media control uses the wacky conspiracies to discredit the real ones right in front of our faces, I don’t think we should play into that

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I'm new around here, and learning about all the different instances and the culture/history behind them has been fun but overwhelming. Is there somewhere I could go for a crash-course?English
01·27 days agoThere’s three factions.
On the liberal instances, you can easily get banned for questioning the USAGM script and saying anything positive about Bad Country (For instance, perceiving and mentioning anything ever happening in Ukraine before February 2022)
Their ideological opponent is the ML instances. The most likely reason to get banned on these instances is doing racist dog whistles, even ones that are traditionally tolerated in the west. A common pastime is liberal posters coming to the ML instances and posting the most insane mask-off fascist takes and getting banned, then starting drama posts in the several comms they have for this purpose
The anarchist instances are (unsurprisingly) less in ideological lockstep. The interesting thing that can happen is getting banned for hating on AI too much. Sometimes they will side with the liberals, sometimes the MLs, depending on the issue
Then I suppose there’s also instances like .zip that by all appearances are neutral in the conflict

Memes@lemmy.ml•I wonder what is being posted on the lib instances in the All tabEnglish
0·1 month agoI’ve actually seen two incarnations of it.
One version is that the Russians are pulling serial killer cannibals out of prisons to fight. I just saw this one within the past few days and I literally traced it back to one of the Radio Free(s) (all in the USAGM network)
The other version is that regular frontline soldiers are so desperate for logistics support that they are eating each other. That one was a while ago and I didn’t run it down
