In order to maintain access to the power this money affords, these people have to continue to secure more. Capitalism is characterised by the imperative of infinite growth, that means that the true vslue of wealth is always speculative as it is always oriented toward some sort of future, imaginary wealth. While these old men are terrible people who, because of the hierarchal nature of this system, are in a position of power that grants their individual actions significantly more gravity than our own, they are in those positions because they wholeheartedly subscribe to the philosophy of capitalism and all of the brutal violence that is necessary to maintain it.
