No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do we know how much apps would cost if we had to replace ad revenue with subscription fees?
6·1 day agoIt gets more complicated when you have to factor in profit…and then shareholders…and then demands for exponential growth. That makes it harder to estimate how much is costs, how much is greed.
(Not that all of this should be free or delivered at cost, necessarily – it’s healthy for people to be able to make a living off of products or services they provide)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do we know how much apps would cost if we had to replace ad revenue with subscription fees?
8·1 day agoThe cost of those to the service provider is generally not zero though. And cost is per user, and these all have fewer users than mainstream social media and “services”.
Though Linux is an exception here, with it costing only the time of hobbyists (at least as far as I know)

World News@lemmy.world•Oil prices rise as US stocks fall ahead of Trump's deadline for IranEnglish
21·2 days agoHow can that be. The protest votes against the Democrats (including non-voters) were supposed to be the anti-genocide votes. I am shocked. Nobody could have seen this coming. Everybody is surprised.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•In this modern world of AI, with devices everywhere having microphones, is it even safe to satirically joke and banter with a friend anymore?
91·3 days agoYes, it’s safe.
The microphones are generally not listening to and processing everything you say.
You can turn off your own devices’ passive listening. (E.g., Siri, Google, Alexa…)
If they do listen to what you say, they’re almost always not going to care beyond “How can we use this to sell you shit you don’t need?”.
It would be too much effort for too little gain, even with AI, to try to “catch” anybody for your “satirical jokes and banter”. In the government’s eyes, you’re not as special as you feel you are.
And even if they did, you’re unlikely to be charged for a crime unless you live in somewhere like North Korea, China, Iran, or maybe the UAE?
Those tend to be more predictable than cars in terms of where they’ll be

Technology@lemmy.world•Internet shutdown in Iran is now the longest in world historyEnglish
49·4 days agoIt would be very odd if the US or Israel did it, because this started when Iran wanted to stop communications among citizens who were protesting the government.
TL;DR, yes. It was Iran. It began before the attacks on Iran (back when it was Iran attacking its own people)
What? Why’s it more expensive than Walmart? Do Dollar Generals sell electronics and appliances? Or do Walmarts not do that in the States? Lol

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it wrong of me not giving a shit when cops get killed? They signed up for the job know what it entails. Same with Firepeople. I feel bad 4 families but no one gives a shit about Nurses or DRs?
0·10 days agoThe percentage of people in those jobs who die is small. In fact, there are quite a few deadlier jobs out there. (I want to guess that they’re mostly related to resource extraction)
Do you also not give a shit when a driver dies because we know that driving is the deadliest method of transportation per kilometre?

LOL…I’m imagining people pre-ordering a free game now
I could see it happen
