Explanation: For the period of the Roman Republic and much of the Empire, Romans regarded wearing trousers as a ‘barbarian’ affectation - instead preferring tunics which left the legs bare.

This preference explicitly includes legionaries and other military men of the Empire. BEHOLD, CIVILIZATION

Fun Additional Fact! The Roman military commander and politician Mark Antony was noted to wear scandalously short tunics in civilian life, explicitly for the purpose of showing off his muscular thighs. 🥵

Did the Scottish also fight in kilts, or did Braveheart lie to me?

Many cultures, historically, fought in tunics which left the legs bare!

I know kilts specifically have a more recent history, and were anachronistic in Braveheart, but Scots definitely fought in kilts in the 17th and 18th centuries. I don’t have a good grasp on Scottish history in general, though, so I couldn’t tell you if they were bare-legged, even if not wearing a tartan kilt, in the medieval period or not.
