Explanation: Albert I was King of Belgium during WW1. Despite the era of monarchs at the front being long-over at this point, Albert made a special point of visiting the frontlines regularly, as Belgium was overrun and occupied in-no-small-part by the German Empire, for which reason he gained the nickname of ‘the soldier-king’.

He was also a major reformer, being part of the post-war Belgian consensus for universal suffrage, and a dedicated conservationist - a then-still-radical position.

Albert I: “Note to self: do NOT be such a horrific colonizer that you not only disgust other colonizers of the period, but also your own nation to the point where it seizes control of the colony from you just to stop your atrocities.”

Leopold II’s Ghost: “You are DISRESPECTING EVERYTHING I FOUGHT FOR”

    Well

It’s not like he would be participating in charges. You’d be pretty safe as long as you’re at least one trench behind the front. The whole reason WWI had trench warfare was that airplanes which could bomb from the sky didn’t exist.

They definitely did have planes that could fly over and drop things, just not that many
