  • Other countries don’t have this problem because they don’t have the free for all media landscape that the US does.

For example, in virtually every other country there’s a well funded public broadcaster. And, even when that public broadcaster isn’t dominating the viewership, it’s normally seen as the most trustworthy news source. So, people can watch their favourite news channel, but when they want to fact check something they know they can tune in the public broadcaster.

Other countries are also not as insane as the US when it comes to defunding public education. Having a population that is able to tell fact from fiction is seen as important by most other countries, even if that means slightly higher taxes. The US sees well funded education as communism, and is trying to get rid of it, or defund it at a minimum.

The US is also one of the only places with a true 2-party duopoly with no other options for voters. Even in countries where only 2 parties have a realistic chance at forming a government, there are other parties that siphon off the crazies, and/or put pressure on the mainstream parties from both left and right.

I’ve lived in 4 other countries and have visited dozens more. The US is truly unique, and not in a good way. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen somewhere else, but it’s much more likely to happen in the US because of unique US dysfunction.

  • It seems like at first the people behind these AI companies were deluded enough to believe that they were really on the verge of creating AGI. When they realized that wasn’t the case they changed plans and now they instead are building a house of cards as fast as possible and hoping that they can go public before it all collapses.

I disagree about the vows. Really big, expensive weddings suck. But, the ceremony that isn’t individualized should be minimized as much as possible.

If you’re going to make a vow that you want to be with someone for the rest of your life, the reason shouldn’t be “it’s just how things are done”. It should be why you’re making such a momentous decision about decades of your life. If there’s generic paperwork to be done after that, then do it. But, don’t make the generic paperwork the focus of the ceremony.

  • It seems like there’s a market for a company that will buy Teslas ultra cheap, modifies them heavily, then rebadges them like Alpine does for Renault, AMG does / did for Mercedes, Abarth for Fiat, etc.

These days those are all subsidiaries of the main brand, and even before that they had a cooperative relationship with the main brand. But, I can imagine a setup where the main brand doesn’t support or approve of what the modifier company does.

  • This was made possible by higher taxes for the rich and strong unions.

And a devastating world war that destroyed the infrastructure of every other industrialized country on the planet, but left the USA almost entirely untouched, leading to a massive demand for tools and materials for rebuilding that could only be met by the USA.

If the Americans want the 1950s economy for white people back, not only do they need the social programs from the 1930s that survived until the 1950s, they also need a devastating world war somewhere overseas that the US only joins halfway through once those other countries have their infrastructure completely obliterated. Starting a war in Iran won’t cut it because then it’s the US having to pay for planes and bombs and artillery, rather than selling to both sides as the US did up until it joined the allies in WWII.

  • It’s possible that some of them don’t want to admit to a stranger that they’d change their vote.

But, most of it is probably choice-supportive bias or post-purchase rationalization. They believe they’re smart, right-thinking people and that they couldn’t have made a horrible mistake, so they look for reasons to feel like they made the right choice, despite all the evidence against it. They’re supported by a whole group of propaganda networks that explain away every bad thing that Trump does and shift the blame to democrats, liberals, trans people, immigrants, non-whites, women, etc.

Her plane may not have been off-the-shelf, but I’m sure she was heavily involved in any modification to it. She was a pilot, that was her concern.

She probably didn’t consider herself a radio operator, and didn’t realize how critical it was to fully understand the radio gear.

My guess is that at that point in time, being a radio operator would be like someone who knew something like 3d printing in great detail today. It was a niche skill that involved a lot of obscure knowledge. If someone doesn’t know something like 3d printing, someone can set it all up for them and then say “ok, when you’re ready, hit this button, when you’re done, do this” and they can use it. I assume that’s what happened with the radio setup. Someone with expertise set it up, and it might have worked, but she didn’t know enough to troubleshoot it when it went wrong.
