Medical, ethical and safety issues aside, I think obesity has been an issue in society for decades and has been trending upwards with no signs of stopping. This is the first thing I feel has really given the majority of society that has been suffering an extra tool in the arsenal of the healthy body toolbag. If diet and/or exercise were viable for the majority of people obesity would not have been trending upwards as it has. I think people are just desperate to get back to a healthy weight, not gain a super model skinny body. Unfortunately there will be people abusing it, people selling possible unsafe/ineffective products. I think the only way to counter this is like Steam (the gaming platform) answer to piracy being an accessibility problem, make it more accessible safely (like how cigarettes and booze is safely accessible even if it isn’t good for you). People should have freedom to choose their vices, make their own decisions and live with the consequences. Just like those you unfortunately gained weight have made decisions, those who want to further want to make decisions on how to lose weight (jab or diet) must bear the consequences
While I think the latest weight loss jabs have been rushed to market and should have been tested for far longer before widespread release I have come around to them offering a useful tool to combat obesity.
I think anybody suggesting you should just eat less or just eat salad really doesn’t understand why people are fat in the first place, and they certainty do not understand insulin response to highly processed, high percentage of sugar containing foods for a start. “You are fat because you eat too much” is such a trite and unhelpful statement, why has that person eaten too much?
An insane percentage of people rebound from large weight loss, jab or no jab, we still do not have a proper way to address that. Until we target why people are able to lose large amounts of weight and not keep it off then we are not going to fix the issue long term.
Insane…
People are finding out that when you go off it, you don’t just gain the weight back, there’s a whole bunch of other issues that aren’t widespread yet because most people keep taking it just so they don’t gain the weight back.
I don’t think the vast majority of people “trying” it realize they’re going to have to keep taking it
Which should have been obvious just because this “miracle drug” showed up after they stopped being able to hand out opiods like candy.
It’s not a magic pill you take for a year and stop, and pharma companies new that before it was released. They’re lying to get people hooked, people that won’t be able to stop.
Because a year after stopping, most people have already gained 2/3s of the weight back and have worse cardiovascular health than at max weight. And they are likely to keep gaining weight.
Long term people that don’t need it are going to be in worse health than if they never lost the weight to begin with.
But for reasons I’ll never understand, people won’t just eat salads till their too full to eat a lot of unhealthy stuff. It’s the easiest diet in the world and what we evolved for. But no one will eat a fucking vegetable these days, then act shocked when colon cancer skyrockets
the key word here is, ‘for reasons I’ll never understand’. I personally will never understand why oh why an alcoholic can’t simply just have a glass of water if they want to have a drink. I’ll never understand why a gambling addict just don’t gamble. I don’t gamble or drink alcohol, so why do people do it?
It’s a matter of pleasure. Some people have a disordered brain that tell them they must gain pleasure at all costs, even if it puts them deep in debt or destroys their liver. Everybody who has a substance or a behavioural issue know it’s harmful but they just can’t willpower themselves out of it. It’s tough, and those who will never understand aren’t exactly making it easy with their judgy attitudes.
It’s a matter of pleasure
Buddy, you’re streets behind…
I’m saying instead of people trying to keep an empty stomach (which is very hard)
They can just force fed themselves salad, that way if they don’t have the willpower to pass on shitty food, it doesn’t matter.
If you have the willpower to eat half a pound of salad a day, you don’t need to use willpower to restrict you’re eating.
I have no idea how I can make this any simpler, but like I mentioned:
People are violently opposed to eating a salad.
I have no interest in spending hours trying to convince you to help yourself. I can lead you to the salad bar, but can’t make you fix a plate
yes. Obviously people are just dumb and weak. joke aside: topic is ridiculously complicated and science is just barely starting to gain insight into why some people struggle so much more than others. And it is certainly not lack of willpower my dear.
People who try to go hungry with an empty stomach, need a lot of willpower.
That’s stupid to try and lose weight by tolerating being hungry.
Which is why I said people can and should, eat a bunch of salad and vegetables so their stomachs stay full.
The problem is people think “dieting” means eating less and our bodies hate eating less and having empty stomachs.
So fill your stomach with low calorie bulky good that takes forever to digest, then your body doesn’t think it’s starving. Instead of screaming at you to fill stomach, it just grinds away on those vegtables to get calories instead. As a bonus it gets the body accustomed to eating smaller portions and less frequently, because it’s anticipating a long digestion.
If your eating high sugar/fat food that digest quickly, your stomach baloons in size to fit as much as possible. As soon as your stomach is empty hundred of millions of years of evolution tells you to fill the stomach up again asap while that high calorie food is available.
The issue is theres no way to make money off pushing salads on people, and if people do that they won’t spend money on other things like ozempic.
Stop trying to fight your body to lose weight, and work with your body to make it understand fat stores aren’t necessary right now.
A starvation and binging when willpower goes out routine does the opposite, and trains your body to hold onto fat for dear life.
Edit:
Thanks for giving an example of people getting belligerent instead of eating a salad tho, but it’s such a widespread attitude, especially in America, that I don’t think we needed one
It’s fiber that is needed. It doesn’t have to be salad, oatmeal would probably prove more satisfying. The average person with dietary hang ups isn’t going to jump from fast food to salads but a good bowl of oatmeal wih with some raisins in it is a much easier sell.
It doesn’t help that eating healthy is more expensive, either in money or time and that junk food manufacturers literally get you addicted to their garbage.
Was scrolling to see if anyone else had made this point. Yesterday me and the family had a Sunday Roast. Chicken, roast potatoes, mash, cabbage and carrots, stuffing, and yorkshire puddings. Costs about £20 depending which shop you go to. For the most part, a healthy meal (granted the puds and roasties are indulgent) and can feed a family or you could make it and have leftovers for days. For £3-6 you can have the frozen ready-meal version which is pumped full of preservatives and shite, and is unhealthy as fuck. If you’re strapped for cash the choice is simple.
I can see the argument coming that it’s a shit example so let’s take a look at another.
Salmon & Grilled Vegetables.
Fresh Salmon - £6-8 Fresh Veg - £3-4 Time to make: 40 mins? Give or take.
Same meal, microwave-cooked:
£3-4 Time to make: 4 mins
One of them is calorie rich, low nutrient, packed with salt and additives, so unhealthy as fuck. Can you guess which one?
It’s really not…
Lettuce is still cheap and it always will be.
manufacturers literally get you addicted to their garbage.
It doesn’t take long to change your gut biome, once that happens you stop having to work against yourself.
And before that happens, you still can’t eat as much junk because salad take a long time to digest so your stomach is physically full.
