The idea isn’t perfection, because scams always exist. It’s to make it super risky to attempt to scam and discourage the largest platforms from doing it.
I’d go one step further and require the same for photos that have been edited in any way, shape, or form.
I also would even simply prohibit pictures that have been modified.

You can’t give the blanket “Democrats” credit for this. The degree to which the Democratic establishment fought to keep guys like him out if power can’t be understated. However the progressive parts of the democratic party are growing in strength and number by the day. I hope some day the party stands up for half of what he does. The line is saying that Democrats/“doctors” know about the little trick and were keeping it from you. That’s not a flattering representation.
“X hates this one trick” is generally a statement where X is seen as the self-serving side and they hate the trick because it makes them redundant.

I would do some personal digging on Gavin Newsom. He seems to be very much a classic politician, i.e. he’ll say whatever he thinks his base wants to hear. But he is notably very flaky on trans allyship in legislature.

The fact that people are so astonished that a politician is actually serving the people that elected him is a pretty damning criticism of your political establishment.
People should also be less surprised that the handsome, well spoken, popular, Mamdani was able to flatter an egocentric, maniac, surrounded by sycophants, like Trump into being his biggest supporter. Forget playing him like fiddle, Trump is the dollar store recorder they forced on us elementary school.
I don’t think it was even intended, he was just applying standard diplomacy. Mamdani clearly has natural charisma. Trump’s even more of a sucker for that than most.
Fully agree. Plenty of examples of him masterfully diffusing confrontation on live TV. Like he honestly blows me away with how well he answers things.

I like Mamdani, he’s great. But he is doing exactly what all politicians should be doing all the time. The fact that this amazing man is seen as a shining star when he’s just actually doing his job as a public servant is terrifying to me as someone with a young child.
Side note, if you Americans ever get sick of Mamdani, Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez… Please send them to Australia, we need people like them.
When Mamdani sat at his desk for the first time, he moved all the neglected paperwork from previous administrations, and discovered a big red button that said “Something Good.” So he pressed it, and Something Good happened.
He kept pressing it, and good stuff kept happening. It turned out, that button was ALWAYS there, and previous mayors could have pressed it at any time, but they never bothered.
Then it turns out that a Something Good button is on the desk of EVERY politician, and they just don’t press it. Why? Because really wealthy people and corporations pay them a lot of money to NOT press that button.
It’s time to make ALL politicians start pressing the Something Good button on their desks.

Already happened in various parts of the beginning of his admin. One example being him keeping the same police commissioner.
The thing is, he keeps delivering on so many things that narratives stay in his favor.
And he’s so clever about it. He talked about what he’s doing and that some people argued he’s only doing small stuff (like fixing potholes) and nothing with big impact.
And he said that all those small things can be done quickly, so people see results quickly and that builds a positive relationship with the public and that builds the political capital do do bigger things and start projects that take longer so people will have to wait and trust longer before results happen.
He is absolutely aware of the importance of the narrative and how to build it.

He’s not even shooting for the stars, and he doesn’t and shouldn’t need to, meeting very base level societal needs is just hitting it out if the park these days.
How are such images not automatically fraud? The whole point of images in a sales listing is to show you what the product is like; they’re either real and accurate or fake and deceptive.
I saw a thing yesterday about how Just Eat are now using AI generated images of the food being offered.
It’s pissed me off for long enough that so many restaurants use stock images, rather than just taking a fucking photo of what they make, but for there to be no human at all in the process is a massive piss take. If they as a restaurant don’t care enough about the food they offer to take some photos of it, then I, even as a fat bastard with a tendency towards gluttony, don’t care enough to order from them.
And that’s just a takeaway. AI images of somewhere that might cost me £1300 a month can fuck right off.
There’s a salon near me that has recently taped up ai generated pictures of people to show what kind of hairstyle they offer. Like, the whole point of the photo is to prove the quality of the service…
I do kind of get it, big companies have the advantage of paid photographers and inventive “serving suggestions” to make a floppy dry mc-chicken look like a Dionysian feast. My local kabab taking a photo of greasy meat with their phone under the old florescant lamps never looks as good.
I mean, I obviously salivate at such images, but I’m not sure I’d trust them to bring in the dough were I a small proprietor.

they’ve always “freshened up” listings by adding furnishings so that part is probably fine. the issues start when the computer moves walls and windows around.
I’ve seen listings show original and “sample” pictures with AI furniture. This is the way.
A listing in my area had AI generated image for showing the surrounding area. The AI misunderstood the scale of a field, and added kids the size of 3 story buildings playing soccer. And this was not realized before being posted.
If that still exists, I’d love to see that hilarious blunder.
Or just don’t include the AI at all. Have some imagination.
Every apartment I ever rented and the home I bought had regular empty photos and it was just fine

Even better take the pictures with tape measures laid across important dimensions so I can actually tell how things would fit.
I’d accept that, and laud it as a valid use case for AI images even; as long as it was clear what was being done and had a human in the loop to ensure the generated image was reasonable.
Yeah. Honestly, I don’t really have a problem if a developer is just able to… not spend a bunch of money on a ton of furniture that’ll get shuttled between different properties, not accidentally bang up a wall, etc, and just make a good looking listing image that accurately represents the space.

Hell, I’d love it if I could look at a listing, and maybe get like 5 or 6 different options for how the space could look in very different styles, rather than the same, bland, generic palette of furniture and colors just because that’s the only truly cost-effective option.
But of course, we can’t have AI do anything good, that’d be ridiculous. It has to move the windows around and make the space look twice as big for no reason!

This is never, ever going to happen, not even once. No landlord will ever willingly lower the price of anything. They’ll just keep charging the same price and pocket the difference. They don’t run charities.

The staging costs are a drop in the bucket relative to the extra $ they’re bringing in just by better marketing the space. Like one month of upsell from an empty box to a staged apartment likely covers those costs - everything else is pure profit.
They’re pricing things based on what the “market” will support, and that doesn’t change whether they spend $200 staging or $2 AI staging. Mom and pop landlords are still wealth parasites trying to maximize profits.
When my house was listed, they freshened up the sky of all things. Every picture had the same clouds regardless of direction.
The clever thing would be AI depth mapping and insertion of 3D models of furniture, etc, rather than full generative AI in-painting
A fisheye lens/high FOV, HDR, and lighting edits already give there illusion of larger better lit rooms.
A use case I’ve seen (not AI actually, but old-school CGI when I was looking a few years ago) is for projects still in construction where you can reserve an apartment and buy when it’s ready. The CGI images show the general shape of the place and illustrate what it might look like once furnished, with the very clear notice that the apartment will be turned over unfurnished and the photos are only there to give you an idea
3D renderings made from the construction BIM model are a totally different thing than probabilistic AI output that might or might not match reality.
CGI furniture is quite common and pretty acceptable as it’s just a layer on top of the photo. Whatever software they use is really good about marching scale.
Personally I’m a fan of it. I lack the ability to look at an empty room and “see” a layout so it’s kind of awesome to have a mock-up…
…But I saw a listing the other day that took me a minute…a pool table taking up way too much room in the basement. Then I caught the small text on GAME ROOM sign. A ceiling tile grid that changes sizes. A hallway that turns into a nook between photos.
That’s where I draw the line. The edits don’t help me understand the layout or give me design ideas, it’s simply false advertising.
The feature I keep seeing in AI images is the way no straight line in the image aligns to the same vanishing point. The edges of the table line up here, the countertops line up here, the fridge here. Its glaring and it would also make it hard to plan a room.
YES that’s what I meant with the ceiling grid. I wasn’t expecting AI at all (wasn’t a thing last time I was browsing) so it took me a minute to figure out what felt so off about the size of the room. The back half looked way bigger as if the room was trapezoidal
And also when listings show furniture mockups, I’m used to it being right after the empty room photo. This listing ONLY had the AI photos, no original to reference.

AI boosters convinced people that we need “AI centrism”, which is exactly thing like this, except they took their lessons from how racist operate, and depicted one extreme as vibe coding/slop posting, while the other as just not wanting to use AI. One AI booster trying to pass as “AI critical” actually used the horseshoe theory in his video, but painting Hasan Piker as the “far left” option to Nick Fuentes. Hasan is not as far left as some people try to make it look like, he’s just annoying and people think extremism means being annoying, while tankies like George of Santos (formerly BadEmpanda) know to keep his cool.
Not defending it, but they usually use AI to stage fake furnishings without actually renting furniture.
I hate that anyway. I want to see photos of an empty property. I can imagine my own furniture and layout, thank you.

With everything out of scale and misleading far beyond the old camera tricks they used to use.
Some images simply overly fake furniture over real locations, and I imagine this is simply an AI extension of what they did with Photoshop. Both should be considered fraud, imo, but photos with furniture likely to sell/rent better than real empty photos.
I miss when we just had staged photos, though I feel like that died during COVID when open houses stopped being a sort of mandatory part of the process.
My sister just did like 3 months of house searching and it was not possible for her to find one without AI photos. Most had full on “reimagine” features.
Worst part is that the scaling is all wrong. AI is usually going for relatively minimalist interior design with a lot of space. In a cramped bathroom that doesn’t work. It clashes with the entire design philosophy because there’s simply no space. What does AI do? It scales down the toilet, sink and shower to create space. If you pay attention to it or maybe have a regular picture in-between the AI ones you see that it’d have to be a tiny toilet and sink but since everything is scaled down it’s not always immediately noticeable.
The point being that even if you redo the room with the finest materials and finest craftsman it can never look like that.
Yeah, look out the window and see vibrant blue and green? Check it out in person: industrial wasteland or dystopian greyscape.
It’s also so fucking annoying when I’m trying to get a feel for the room’s dimensions and space, and I have to try to imagine it through a fucking enormous number of AI-generated plants cluttering the entire fucking thing. Like, no interior designer or professional home stager would fill the space half as much, so why the fuck are they using AI to make it look like that?
