Isn’t the “original” still ongoing? How do you remake something that’s still being made?

Yeah, I know they’re just gonna start from the beginning because there’s like literally a thousand episodes, but still.

a thousand episodes, 1% of which actually advance the story. If this new series compresses all the bullshit out and retains the good parts, I wont be mad. I watched about 250 of them during the pandemic before I gave up. I love the characters and enjoy the story, but I don’t have all day to skip through filler content.

Look up One Pace. It’s a fan edit of the principle series that cuts out all recaps, flashbacks, and dead air.

One Pace was how I got my husband into it. I read the manga, although I stopped around 800 (maybe?) and need to get back at it. We tried to do it without One Pace and dear lord.

Couldn’t imagine for my first time watching missing the ‘fillers’, the lore in the series is what makes it stand out. I definitely understand wanting to see the story unfold quicker, but I’d still watch every episode on my first watch. I haven’t read the manga though, for context.

It’s not that unusual, it’s been over 25 years since it started. The current anime will closely follow the manga for the veteran fans, the new one is meant for people who want to get into it but don’t want to watch hundreds of episodes of filler in an old animation style.

Reminds me of that time Fullmetal Alchemist did a complete remake of the anime just 5 years after it ended.

FMA and FMA:B are a little bit different, Fullmetal Alchemist was made while the manga was still being written. It ended up being a completely different story than Brotherhood. So it’s not really a “remake,” FMA:B is the manga accurate story, and FMA is kinda like fanfiction, or an alternate universe.

Realistically, One Piece should be wrapping up sometime in the next decade, hopefully in the next five years. By the time Wit catches up to the first big arc Alabasta, it’s likely that the actual anime will be wrapping up.

One Piece also recently switched to seasonal instead of releasing episodes weekly. I’m not sure how much Toei and Wit are working together on this, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Wit’s releases will be coming when One Piece would otherwise be off-air.

Also, Oda is kinda a hack writer. He loves the JJ Abrams style of mystery boxes with no plan for how to pay them off. Going back through and adding setup for some of the later story beats that weren’t foreshadowed properly is something that the live-action show has been doing, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this remake is going to take some of those notes.

“in the next decade” as if this isn’t The Simpsons of anime (mostly due to the fact that it’s been airing for 30+ years)

I mean, it is going to end lol. Oda’s said that the current saga is the last one, and judging by what all’s happened in Elbaph so far I do believe him. The issue is that even if it’s only going to go for three more arcs, One Piece arcs are insanely long, mostly for no reason.

For as much as it gets memed, idk if Oda actually has any interest in a 2 Piece or w/e. I think instead of just making endless episodes, they’re gonna milk it with endless remakes.

They are not going to animate all the story so far. They’ll just focus in the classic era of One Piece, till like, Jaya or Enies Lobby. There are people who says that only the “4:3 era” is going to be animated.

Game of Thrones tried but I don’t think netflix will run into the same problems of books not getting finished.
