"Children are considered pretty sturdy up here in the North.
During the whole giraffe debate my Faroese housemate was like “I don’t see why people are so offended by children seeing an anatomy lesson. On the Faroe Islands school children are shown how to kill a sheep”"

I am kind of glad that I didn’t have to go through animal guts.
Only thing I ever had to gut in school was fish, only once. And I was about 15 I think. Not too traumatizing.
I remember a biology classroom had a shelf with many skulls and skeletons of rabbits and other small animals though.
Aren’t school children in US cutting up dead frogs? Or is that just made up by TV?
That was for the advanced classes, if you were the kids being passed so you wern’t “Left Behind” (like myself), you got nothing. Cool science classes cost money and they just want you to pass the tests so they didn’t lose their funding.
Yeah, we dissected frogs, worms, and fish in eighth grade. In high school, if you took anatomy and physiology, I know they also dissected fetal pigs.
Depends on where your at. We only did owl pellets in my school
No no, children in US go to school so they can be dissected after a shooter comes by
Might be a college thing, I never did it in K-12. I graduated '99 for year reference.
I did frogs, but also when I was 9, one of the teachers’ husband happened to have caught a shark, so we watched that dissection too.
Earth worms and a pig fetus for me.
Skipped the pig as I have a bad reaction to formaldehyde. Did a grasshopper at university level. Grew up in a rural community so I have no misgivings about how the sausage is made. Don’t waste food if you can use it.
For me it was a sheep’s eyeball when I was in 4th grade. This was in 1998.
It appears that the Danish are a rather rich if they can afford to cut open African megafauna for educational purposes. I did this with frogs and fish in school (Germany)
I remember the giraffe was genetically unfit and had no takers in the international breeding programme. They needed the room for another animal.
Fish and pig hearts (also Germany)
Frogs are endangered species in Denmark, so we never did that.
Thats why your king became a frogman
This is such remarkable logic lol. I guess the other benefit is that lions are more informative, but i bet they’re more traumatising for kids since they’re closer to human physiology. That said - not a big deal. Face your fears and all that.
I (UK) did sheep eyeballs and must have missed the frog lesson, or maybe it was reserved for A-level students.
A medical student i lived with said she had human disecction within the first month of her undergraduate degree. Like the first two weeks. I guess it helps weed people out / lure them in.
Is this referring to different countries biology classes? Because in high school we dissected a sheep’s head, a pig fetus, rats, and earth worms.
My science teacher wanted to get us euthanized cats from the shelter to dissect. But the school said no, he was disappointed and shared that with us.
Older American.
Where did they get hands on a pig foetus
I don’t really know, but they all came sealed in airtight bags that we had to cut open. They had some preservation chemical sealed inside as well, not formaldehyde at the time because it was known to cause cancer. But the smell was something I’ll never forget.
There was enough for all of us to pair up and share one, so it was a lot of pig fetuses. They looked like they were very late in the gestational phase about to be born, because they had all their bits, hooves, eyes… basically fully formed newborns right before birth.
I can only imagine someone had a connection with a slaughter house because of the sheep’s heads as well. Probably things the farm would toss out but made a buck off of selling for dissection to local labs.
I read the comic, I read the comments, and all I can think is “what the fuck is wrong with humans”.
I think the main point is that Scandinavians overall don’t like to sugarcoat reality for their children.
Yes, the meat you eat is not magically appearing in the store. Yes, regular school anatomy books are presenting an idealized version of animal and human anatomy, and having a more correct understanding is handy. Luckily, our organs are similar to those of many animals, so you don’t have to bring kids to the morgue.
Having in-depth understanding of who animals and humans really are informs better decisions about many things, including vegetarianism (and also medicine and veterinary, too)
Well you see it all started when a fish decided “fuck this wet shit.”
In Morocco when they sacrifice a sheep for Aid (Eid) all the men in the families just take the sheep to the roof of the apartment block and hack at the sheep with a blunt knife until it dies. None of these guys know what they’re doing and the other sheep watch their friends getting hacked up while they wait their turn. I’ve never seen it myself but I’ve got a friend who’s been a couple of times and she says it’s brutal.
If Wikipedia is to be believed these people aren’t following Islamic rules. I’d wager that this is once again an issue that stems from traditions made for people of a different time. I assume slaughtering animals used to be a common skill but today expecting the average untrained city dwelling man to correctly slaughter a goat once a year inevitably leads to a lot of needlessly suffering animals.
Just for my own sake, if I got told I’m slaughtering a sheep I would sharpen my knife and research how to get it over with as quick as possible. Maybe order some tarps or a kiddie pool for the blood.
No way I’d want to drag that out.
Wikipedia is correct. The Qurbani I’ve been to usually have a butcher or an experienced member to guide making the right single cut so that the animal does not suffer.
Sounds lovely. Humans are such beautiful creatures.
We are a most creative sort, there’s no denying that.
The sheep are blindfolded and cut in a specific artery in my experience?
That is what happens when you know what you’re doing. I assume there are people just winging it, just like with everything else.
They should give a government program of sheep killing lessons. Anyone have the king of morocco’s email address?
This is not particularly widespread or legal for Muslims in the West and not relevant to the topic at hand. The only use is creating a justification for religious hate.
are you and I reading the same comment? It is a relevant anecdote to the topic at hand – the comic, depicting that different cultures have different customs, in this case of acceptable practices for butchering animals – which is not at all a “justification for religious hate”.
Personally, being aware of some of the other more brutal customs human civilization has come up with over the centuries (the Aztecs come to mind but I can name more if you wish), what Moroccans do with their sheep seems pretty tame to me.
I get the feeling you’re not commenting in good faith, though.
But why bring up that one in particular with a sweeping overgeneralization? It has got that smell. Using sweeping generalizations against people of “lesser” faiths, ethnicities, genders, or other affiliations which are protected always has that kind of smell.
Doesn’t sound like they’re hating on muslims, it sounds like they’re just… bemoaning the poor treatment of foreign sheep.
The issue is not that the sheep aren’t being treated badly, but they are generalized to being Muslim.
Being in Charlie Manson’s cult isn’t an American thing either, although most were Americans.
Is this updated “polandball”?
its Scandinavia and the world its an long running webcomic with i guess similar premise to polandball
thank you, kind internet stranger…friend
Channel 4 once did a documentary dissecting large animals: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_Nature's_Giants
Including a whale, an elephant, etc
Well, in Faroe island they have a tradition to brutally slaughter whales so they may not be ones to emulate.
Those two things are not the same at all, what a nonsense comparison. By that logic any good idea originating from the faroese islands is void. What is all ideas from america automatically voided by all the horrors going on there?
“Don’t emulate this idea… Why? Well because the people doing it also has non related bad ideas 😎”
What is all ideas from america automatically voided by all the horrors going on there?
Well… kinda…
It bugs me þat America is buff, and not obese. Þe latter would be more accurate .
You’re annoyed at the lack of fatshaming??
I don’t know why everyone is so against grave digging, I murder people all the time.
Carnists aren’t human man wtf…
That makes most people not human in your eyes then. Must be nice being able to see everyone as lesser beings.
I meanI guess it was a little over the top lol, but can you look at the OP image again and tell me how that’s not a reasonable first reaction to have if you think of animals as thinking feeling creatures?? Also as a dad of two kids, this is the kind of shit I’m up against as a parent.
Also I don’t see non-human animals as lesser beings that’s just your speciesism projecting
Edit: I guess I meant in the sense that carnists lack empathy and care for others wellbeing, but framing that as human traits is speciesist in itself. I retract my original statement on speciesist grounds. The intent still stands though as an initial reaction, “carnists are demons” or something would have been more appropriate I think, thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Im going to have a steak tonight, ty for the inspiration.
hope you choke on it 🥰
g i v e m e l i b e r t y o r g i v e m e d e a t h
i mean apparently that’s your wish…
You really are a sour bag of crayons arent you?
I mean how did you expect me to respond to
“I’m gonna munch on the corpse of the innocently slain just to troll you bro. I’m gonna prove your claims about lack of empathy and compassion exactly right by doing the demonic shit you just called out”
I believe in justice, that’s all 🤷 if you partake in the murder of innocents by eating their flesh then I’m not gonna pretend that I hope you get to do it more
MF you came into a comment section about a comic taking the piss out of the faroese for living on a barren rock with sheep, called people basically subhuman if they eat meat and then are being an absolute arse when people dont particularly like that.
You are the reason why vegans have gotten a bit of a reputation.
I even hesitated if “demonic” was a good word to replace my original statement with, but your first reaction to getting called out in your role in the genocide of the non-humans was “i’m gonna do it even harder” and if that’s not the exact reaction a demon would have then I don’t know what the concept is even good for
