When is meat not recalled in the US?

You guys should probably set up some sort of the government department to keep an eye on this.

This is more you should know if your in Georgia. America isn’t so tiny that this small of a recall is remotely fucking close to “if you are American”.

I got very worried for a second. But the post title is nothing but fear mongering and very misleading.

Do people not realize how fucking MASSIVE America is?

This is bad advice, fellow Americans.

Look up where the recalls and violations have happened. Also, look up the cuts of meat.

Big numbers don’t mean all of America. What a stupid suggestion.

I think the best advice is to do both: check what meat if affected and whether that might include the meat you’re looking at. If you’re not sure, maybe skip meat for a change. You can do without.

I don’t want to like Costco, but they’re making it really hard.

I don’t like being in there, I don’t like shopping in a damn warehouse. I hate the parking lot clusterfuck experience.

I do like that they curate a very good selection and they treat their employees well.

Why can’t they just run a normal-scale grocery store?!

Honestly my big Costco gripe is just that the sizes are awkward and big, but they aren’t really selling to businesses anymore… So like why? It would make sense to me if I were buying like cases or something that could be resold. I have a small family, so it’s always an exercise in creativity to use all of the produce and meat before it gets wasted. But if I bought less at a regular grocery store, I would almost always be paying more.

    • YSK California has the most stringent food safety regulations in the country, going above and beyond what the fed requires. Thank fuck I live here and not somewhere that does the bare minimum required of them (which, rn, is doing nothing at all).

The internet says the US sells appoximately 200 million pounds of meat a day based on per capital numbers. This is a big number, but drop in the bucket.

That said, they put a false inspection number on it and the recall happened because they got caught. My guess is mis labeling and not being inspected is probably more common than we know.

Do you know why they found it? Because they LOOK for that.

It’s an extremely unpopular opinion, and Trump has tried to make our safety nets worse, but the US has pretty good safety nets.

But just like anything else, good safety doesn’t mean nothing ever happens. “Safe” drivers are still involved in accidents. Airplanes are safer than cars but do occasionally crash.

We should always want more safety, but food safety in the US is still pretty damned good.

Massive cuts to air traffic control has resulted in accidents killing people.

Massive cuts and underfunding of regulatory bodies has made food more unsafe and deadly. Combined with a legislative environment that also has different pesticides, processes, growth hormones, gmos and other additives deemed unsafe for human consumption in other developed countries.

Massive cuts in foreign aid are leading to outbreaks endangering US food supplies.

Well it is and it isn’t. They have bought up all the packing plants creating a monopoly and an artificial constraint/bottle neck. So the billionaires set the prices which was already putting small ranchers out of business. Trump 2.0 has just exacerbated this process by making the inputs way more expensive.

No boil, but wash in (lightly) soapy water with lots of agitation for at least a minute and rinse well. Or use a product designed for that and rinse well.

Yeah, I’d be pissed too. The problem these days is that anything less than an actual cleaning agent isn’t going to dislodge whatever industrial-strength nasty is on the leaves, so you can’t just rinse and call it done anymore.

Not shaming you, I had to learn the hard way too. I wash all produce now, and have for years. When you know, you know, and now unfortunately you know too.

I’ve been eating the beans still, no problems, so the cooking must’ve helped neutralize it.

The tomatoes are pretty watery, even after pulling out over a cup of water. Plus the lime juice added a bit back.

Basically I just dumped it into a high-rimmed sauce pan, turned on the heat and waited til it was boiling. I gave it ~25 minutes on a light boil, and it smelled a bit less pungent but otherwise looked about the same.

Damn near everything in this shithole is contaminated as of the past year or two so there’s no winning safety-wise by shifting to plant-based, at least on that front.

I have noticed I tend to get sicker when I eat the (properly cooked!) little meat I can lately, though, which I suspect is due to skyrocketed antibiotic use in poultry farming the last decade or two. I also avoid deli meats for similar reasons.

I’m gonna need you to go into your moldy bathroom, look into your toothpaste splattered mirror…and slap yourself. Three times. Really hard.

Or, just look at yourself and think about what you just said.

I’m sure either option will be equally painful.

Don’t feel so bad about being a terrible human. Maybe someday you’ll be better. I hope so. There’s plenty of shitty people out there. Be unique.
